QMJHL Basically Eliminating Fighting

This isn't a good thing, if this catches on in the Junior leagues in Canada, its going to basically kill tough hockey.

Quebec announces new hockey violence rules
Quote:
Young hockey players in Quebec may think twice about using their hockey gloves as boxing gloves in the wake of strict penalties announced Wednesday to curb on-ice violence.

Hockey Quebec is targeting unsportsmanlike behaviour such as fighting, checking the back of the head and verbal abuse in the minor leagues.

Among the new rules:

* Players who fight, instigate, or jump into an on-ice brawl as a third combatant will be suspended for two games on a first offence.
* A second offence puts the player out for four games and means a trip before a disciplinary committee.
* A third offence means an indefinite suspension.
* If the fight happens in the last five minutes of play or overtime, the players involved will be penalized an additional game and their coaches will also be suspended for one game.

Can you post the link?

That is horrible news... as if the Q didn't have a "soft" label as is, now they enforce these new rules. It's clear the direction that the league and hockey in general is heading, but it's not like fighting is going to be completely banned from professional hockey anytime soon, so I just see this as weakening (literally, and in the player's progression) the QMJHL.

This is ****ing terrible. This will essentially kill the Quebec leagues or most minor leagues.

Its the end of the world....

People are over-reacting here, there is actually a minimal change to the rules last year.

The third man in rule is doubled from one game to two and the coach now is banned for a fight in the last five minutes - that is all that is changed.

All those other rules mentioned were already in place the last couple of years.

There is no change to the rule on one on one fighting.

Are you sure Moose?

The way the article is worded is that a one on one fight would be a 2 game suspension IMO. I hope that you're right but the article makes it sound like any fighting at all would be punished with a 2 game ban.

As I understand it, these are santions from Hockey Quebec - not the QMJHL. The Q will announce their rules shortly and I highly doubt they'll be suspensions for each fight.

The Q is governed somewhat by the CHL so there would have ot be some middle ground somewhere.

We'll have to wait and see.

I really can't see them being so stupid especially with a lot of teams barely breaking even.

I think the part in bold is the key phrase. It seems the 3rd man in penalty is what's being punished more harshly, not the one on one fights.

Another question is what is the higher governing body for the Q, Hockey Quebec or the Canadian Hockey League that all the Major Junior leagues are under?

These sanctions are for a lower level in Quebec than the Q I believe.

The CHL would have more of a say in the Q rules.

That's what I thought, like you said we'll have to see what the Q has to say about their rules.

If the Q changes its fighting rules, and the CHL approves them, wouldn't the WHL and OHL have to follow the same guidelines?

No, the rules across the leagues are not all the same.

This my friends is the begining of the end. Hockey all over is starting to cut down on what they call "on ice violence" which in my oppion if taken out compleatly will ruin the integrity of hockey in general.

Seems like they are trying to discourage line brawls in the Q. Thanks a lot, Roy Jr.

Yeah, because there are no more important things in the world then some hockey fights in minor leagues.
