OHLer In Critical Condition After Hit

Quote:
Kitchener Rangers' defenceman Ben Fanelli is listed in critical but stable condition in Hamilton General hospital after being injured by a devastating hit during Friday night's OHL game between the Rangers and Erie Otters.

The 16-year old Fanelli was rushed to Grand River Hospital in Kitchener then airlifted to Hamilton General after being driven into the endboards by Erie's Michael Liambas half way through the second period.

The Oakville, Ontario native's head hit the glass while his helmet flew into the air before Fanelli hit the ice hard. Blood pooled on the ice from cuts above Fanelli's eyebrow and face. The game was delayed for 40 minutes as Fanelli was attended to and placed in an ambulance.

Liambas, who was ejected from the game and given a match penalty for boarding, was reportedly very shaken up by the incident.

================

I want to feel bad for the kid and all, BUT WHAT THE F*CK WAS HE DOING TURNING LIKE THAT? One of the biggest problems going today in hockey is guys turning to avoid checks at the last minute thinking the other guy will slow up. Then when the guy delivering the hit doesn't let up, we get these kinds of sickening injuries because the player chose to try to avoid the hit rather than taking it. The O should rescind Lambias' game misconduct, and he's got to realize this wasn't his fault. Fanelli put himself in a horrible spot where he couldn't defend himself and paid for it.

Hopefully the kid is OK but I agree that it was a dumb move to turn around like that.

They absolutely should rescind the gamer on that, it's incredibly unfortunate but the way Faneli turned at the last second is what caused him so much trouble there. When are guys going to learn to stop turning their backs at the last second?

Terribly stupid move by the kid to turn like that to avoid the hit. Nothing the guy hitting him could have done IMO.

I don't get it. My 11 year old nephew spent close to a week at a hockey camp that shows kids just not how to throw a hit, but how to take one too. From this short clip it almost looks like this kid broke every single rule they try to teach you. I wish the clip was a bit longer, or something other than a newsclip; part of me is almost convinced that he didn't see the guy coming because he was more intent on playing the puck, but still - no doubt he put himself in a terrible and vulnerable position.

Regardless - best of luck to this young guy and I hope he makes a full recovery.

see thats where the goalie needed to help him out as well by yelling watch your backside. now he might have, but there is nothing that liambas could have done. its sad, and i hope the kid gets well quickly, but the goalie could have done more to have this situation avoided as well.

Sometimes you just make mistakes. I've taken some pretty bad hits from making one stupid mistake. Things happen so fast out there.

Don Cherry tonight said the same sort of thing about guys taking a pass with their heads down and being clobbered(Richards, Phaneuf etc). He said the bench(or the other players) need to warn by yelling, etc to let their team-mates know when a bell ringer is coming. In this case it was a clean, hard hit and I hope the kid is gonna be alright. Good catch Chilly.

Clean hit? He chased the kid down and stalked him from about center ice onwards, he caught an opponent that he knew couldn't see him coming and drove his head into the glass with an elbow with enough force to break the kid's helmet, and also broke the kid's skull and several facial bones as well.

That was about as far from a clean hit as is imaginable and has left a kid fighting for his life in critical condition with a serious head injury. It was 24 hrs before the kid was able to breathe on his own because of this assault.

Not only that but, on his way out the other side of the net, he cross checked another Ranger in the face, further demonstrating his intent to just hit and maim anything that moved on the ice at the time. He's a 20 yr old over ager with a history of this sort of garbage, 4 or 5 career goals and hundreds of PiMs assaulting a 16 yr old promising rookie because he saw an opening to destroy someone that he could sneak up on.

Flame me all you guys like, anyone that actually thinks this was a clean hit somehow, really doesn't have an opinion worth worrying about anyway.
