[Official] Construction on NHL-style arena in Quebec City to begin in September

Quote:
It's official — Quebec City says it will begin construction on a new NHL-style arena this September.

Mayor Regis Labeaume says the $400-million arena will hold about 18,000 people.

The arena is expected to be complete by September 2015 — now all the city needs is a team to play in it.

The Quebecor media empire landed the naming rights for the future arena and was granted exclusive rights to manage the facility.

Labeaume says the city can proceed with the project after finalizing an agreement with Quebecor before a March 31 deadline.

The province and Quebec City have pledged millions in taxpayer money for the project.

http://www.660news.com/sports/articl...n-in-september
- Péladeau (Quebec Media Empire owner) adds 40 millions for everything inside the arena: Jumbotron, TV studios, sound, etc.
- Building contruction: september 2012 to september 2015.
- Volume reviewed from 70 000m³ to 68 000m³ (same size than the Consol Energy Center)
- They're gonna keep the old facade of the Hippodrome de Québec which was important to the population:

- Many millions invested into the old Colisée to make it adequate for an NHL team for the first couple of seasons (new boards, corporate boxes, etc)
- Jeremy Jacobs (Boston Bruins' owner) says that according to him, a majority of owners want a team to move in Quebec City

I highly doubt the NHL will move another franchise to Quebec and I also doubt that they'll expand too.

This statement is understandable from a Devils' fan.

The thing is that they are renovating the old coliseum which is not a worst place than the Nassau Coliseum to play in. They are getting new boards and new glasses, and all that superficial stuff tha Bettman wants in an arena.

Only 15 200 places, but for the 2 or 3 seasons, I think it'll be okay. It can't be worst than the daily 10 000 they have in Phoenix... they can't even sell tickets when their team is going into the playoffs.

It's such a non-sense to have teams like Phoenix where it costs the league a huge amount of cash and where there are no fans when you can move the team in a place where there are tons of fans waiting for it.

Having a team in Quebec City would make the eastern conference even more interesting for te real fans.

Why did the Nordiques leave Quebec in the first place?

Financial troubles. The coliseum needed repairs and the owner didn't want to pay, and and the government didn't want to pay either. So the owner sold them and the team moved.

But now, the government, Quebecor Media and the town hall all are investing.

With the promise of a new arena in a few years, their 15,000 or so barn now is fine for a few years, but may not even be necessary because who knows wtf is going on in phoenix... seems like every week theres a new buyer and then something falls through.... back to the arena, it's better than the lightnings first season of 10,000 seat barn and the panthers 14,000 seat barn their first year. Yeah that was the early 90's I know. I'm all for it, but which team will it be that relocates? maybe there will be more relocations than just one team. who knows

Well the first team that's gotta move obviously is Phoenix. I'm sorry for the few Yotes fans remaining, but... it is what it is. I mean there are 5.5 million people living there and they can't fill up the arena. There are 700 000 people in Quebec City but there are going to be more fans in the stands and better TV ratings.

I agree but WHEN? It seems like it's been in talks for 5 years! The NHL doesnt want to give up on phoenix 1 bit. The city of phoenix as far as I can tell doesn't want to give up on them. The people who live in phoenix don't give a ****, except the 10-15k that go to the games semi-regularly.
