Marty McSorley Announced as New Sharks Television Color Analyst

SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks Director of Broadcasting Frank Albin announced today that former Sharks player and 18-year NHL veteran Marty McSorley has been hired as the team’s new television color analyst. McSorley will join television play-by-play broadcaster Randy Hahn for Sharks telecasts on FSN Bay Area this season.

McSorley spent the 2005-06 season working for Fox Sports Net West, based in Los Angeles, providing in-studio coverage and analysis for the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks broadcasts.

A Sharks alumnus, McSorley spent the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons with San Jose, posting 28 points (six goals, 22 assists) and 326 penalty minutes in 113 games. Off-the-ice, McSorley was an active member in the local communities.

"Marty has played with and against some of the greatest players in the history of the game,” said Albin. “His love of the game, coupled with his NHL experience, will provide Sharks fans some excellent insight."

The two-time Stanley Cup Champion (Edmonton: 1986-87, 1987-88) accumulated 3381 penalty minutes in his illustrious career, fourth most in NHL history. In addition, the rugged forward tallied 359 points (108 goals, 251 assists) in 961 NHL games with Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Los Angeles, New York Rangers, San Jose and Boston. In 115 NHL playoff games, he added 39 points (ten goals, 29 assists) and 374 penalty minutes. A versatile player, McSorley played defense and forward.

“My wife and I loved living in the Bay Area and are excited to return,” said McSorley. “The Sharks are known for being a family organization and I am grateful to rejoin their ranks. In addition, it’s an honor to try and fill the large shoes left by Drew Remenda. It will be a challenging task, but one that I look forward to undertaking.”

McSorley was part of the monumental trade of Wayne Gretzky to the Kings in August 1988 and spent five years providing offense, grit, and a winning attitude for Los Angeles. In 1993, he was a key factor for the organization as the Kings reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history, posting ten points (four goals, six assists).

Over the course of his NHL career, McSorley has been teammates with current Sharks Patrick Marleau (1997-98, San Jose), Joe Thornton and Kyle McLaren (1999-00, Boston Bruins) and Mike Grier (1998-99, Edmonton Oilers)

He served as head coach for the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League from 2002-04.

I assume this is sarcasm...

Great news! I mean seriously, who wouldn't want to hear Marty's thoughts right when a heavyweight fight breaks out?

I'd be very interested to hear Marty doing color, especially commenting on a nice Parker-Laraque tilt!

Eh.

I love seeing former scrappers like him getting these kinda jobs. I'm just disappointed I won't get to hear much (if any) of his commentary.

That's good to hear. I'm also looking forward to hearing some of Marty's comments during and after a scrap.

Darn, I enjoyed him doing the SoCal Fox broadcasts. Why the hell did they let him go?! Well, so much the better the Bay Area. Enjoy, boys, Marty is good fun and good perspective.
