This is a league that lives on gate receipts, more than any other in North America. For a long time, the NFL has had a 60-40 gate receipt split between the two teams playing. If the NHL tried something like this, teams like the Panthers and Coyotes could make up a substantial amount of their shortcomings on road trips. Then, the NHL could stop trying to shove salary caps and pay reductions, because there would be more parity when it comes to the revenue of these respective teams. This is all speculation, of course; the original six teams don't want to squander away their ridiculous profits, and would all say "**** you!" if the league tried to propose this. It would never get passed. But if such a system were in place, a lot of this crap could be avoided... |

Your options to make it competitive are A)Curtailing salaries (what they're trying and failing at); or B) sharing the money among the teams. |
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the 27 teams making 17% is misleading. I don't remember the numbers but let's say for the sake of argument that 20 teams make 40% and the other 7 are losing 23%, bringing the numbers down. Something like that. I'll have to try to find that article again.

Kind of ironic, #1 in worth and near the bottom year after year......

Can't really blame it on the salary cap either, although for years the Leafs and Rangers did both try and buy their cups... With the Rangers succeeding in 1994 with half the old Oilers squad.
Decades of poor management and the Leafs are still number one, even though their arena looks like their fans dress up as empty seats a lot of the time. I wonder how many seats are sold to corporate sponsors. The league should look at contracting a number of teams. It would improve the competition level in the game, eliminate the financial drain that some teams in poor markets are siphoning from profits, and would go a long way to re-establishing the "elite" level of the NHL. Less number of teams with the old 23 man roster would also allow for more fighting, better rivalries, and more competition between players. |
A billion dollar franchise and a $1 team. Add in the Leafs have the highest average ticket price in the league and their fans must be so proud of themselves for the wealth they've created for the owners.
|
You have to take into account that 82 million dollars is pure profit after all expenses are paid , that's what the owners are making in pocket after the year end audit is done .
Not bad for the second rate team they keep putting on the ice year after year , but I will give the Leaf fans credit , they are the most loyal fans of any team sport , you just cant get tickets to a leaf game unless you take out a mortgage on your house and include your wife and kids in the deal .. |
Imagine how much the Leafs could make if the iced a quality team now and then.

Dam shame for their loyal fans that have waited ever since 1967 to cheer on their team in the Stanley Cup finals , just too have them contend for the cup would satisfy many of them , that's all my brother wants from them , he just wishes for a team to play in the finals before he dies win or lose , he has a real bad heart condition .. |
