KHL Announces Broadcast Agreement w/ESPN

The Kontinental Hockey League has reached an agreement with the US sports TV channel ESPN to broadcast games in the 2012/2013 KHL Championship. The games will be shown on the ESPN3 channel in the United States, Territories of the United States, and also in Great Britain.

ESPN3 reaches 73 million American households and devotes most of its output to live broadcasts of events, including college football, college basketball, the NBA, MLB, ICC (International Cricket Council) competitions and qualifying matches of FIFA tournaments.

During the first decade of October, the channel will broadcast five KHL games. The planned schedule includes:
Dynamo Moscow vs Ak Bars on Oct. 3rd;
Lev vs SKA on Oct. 6th;
Slovan vs Dynamo Moscow on Oct. 7th;
CSKA vs SKA on Oct. 8th;
Lev vs Dynamo Moscow on Oct. 9th.

They should show AHL games instead.

So, they completely ignore the top league here to show a Russian league? ESPN is a JOKE. How many people are going to watch anyway? The games start at like 8:00 A.M. EST. I usually watch one or two a day.

I think the majority of PPL are at work by the time the KHL games are televised , just a waste to even do any games at that time , they should do AHL games instead , I imagine that's the top league you are referring to..

they can't show the ahl in north america. ahl live is the only stream that the league allows to show games here. espn picked up the ahl last season for in europe which is all they could do.

kind of exciting... might get to see a guy die right on the ice :evil:

Question: Are they showing games every month?

Humpzilla 10-02-2012 09:24 AM

Well there goes my chance of watching Trevor Gillies on ESPN. But maybe we might see "Nasty" Mirasty skating on the BSPN in the opening game.

C'mon guys...its better than nothing.

you wouldn't be able to anyways...it's only online broadcast, not being shown on tv...it's stated in the release

I clearly don't read. Either that or I felt I had read enough :approve:

The KHL hinted at having other teams on their FaceBook. I think they care about Malkin more though. It's not like Gillies would do anything anyway.

Edit: The KHL seems to think this is a TV deal.

The game times shouldn't be an issue with ESPN3 as they allow for "rewatching" most (maybe all?) of what they air.

Is there any chance they could show OHL games here in the states or are there similar deals to the AHL one that would prevent it?

frankie515 10-02-2012 10:18 AM

ESPN 3? Not sure if I even get that...
