Fighting in playoffs fashionable again

Fighting in playoffs fashionable again
Quote:
Anaheim, Calif. -- With a one-two punch goes the theory that there's no fighting in the NHL playoffs.

The truth is there's much more fighting this year, with 31 fighting majors in the opening two rounds entering Tuesday night.

In last year's four rounds, there were only 14 fighting majors, according to hockeyfights.com.

The 31 majors, with two-plus rounds remaining, are the most since 32 in 2004.

More than likely, the league will finish with more fights than any playoff season since 1994 (39), if not 1991, when there was a goon alert with 93 fighting majors.

So what's going on?

Perhaps Anaheim forward George Parros, who was third in the league during the regular season with 23 fights, has the best explanation.

Mainly due to some great matchups in the post-season.

Back when the Wings had a set, they had a great series with the Blues, where on game produced 8 fights.

There was also a good North stars/Hawks seres as well.

The 1991 playoffs kicked ass! The Kings alone has 11 FM's in 2 rounds, 8 of them agaisnt the Canucks.

The real question is WTF happened in 1992? Fighting was always ramped up in the playoffs. Those 91 #s are probably very similar to any year in the 80s. In the early 90s is when it fell off the table.

Just a little HF research here for ya:

In the:

1988 Post-season: 88 fights, which would equate to roughly 176 FMs (give or take a few unfair bouts)

1989 Post-season: 50 fights, roughly 100 FMs

1990 Post-season: 29 fights, roughly 58 FMs

Clearly this trend has died. The database here covers back to the 87-88 season, so I can't really tell you what the numbers were before the '88 post-season, but it looks like it has been a falling trend since then.

Now my history is a bit foggy, but wasn't the instigator set in place in 1992? and were there any additional "playoff rules" added on as well?

80's hockey was alot of fun.

I thought the instigator was before that, just not called that much.

Here is a 2nd period box score I saved from a 1988 game I was at--- as you can see there are at least 4 instigators handed out.

VF actually informed that our database here goes back to the 1983-84 post-season, so to only further prove Merlin's point and stregthen this trend, here are the numbers dating back to the 1984 post-season:

1984: 94 fights
1985: 95 fights
1986: 86 fights
1987: 80 fights
1988: 88 fights
1989: 50 fights
1990: 29 fights

Now to HH, I have read in many different articles that the NHL's official apotion of the instigator rule took place in the 1992-93 season, but I can't exactly find concrete proof, and your box score there certainly is counter evidence.

Can anybody verify the very beginning of the instigator rule?

Until I see 50 fights in 1 playoff season again, the "new" playoffs will be considered weaksauce.

I am pretty sure there has always been a instigator rule to some extent but the rule was not really talked about till 1988 and then was not enforced until 92/93 (bettymans first season) when it was made stronger and then it all went to schit!! Hence the major drop in FMs between 91 and 92 regular seasons and playoffs. Also someone asked before if rules were put in for the playoffs and YES this is also true and those rules were carried over into the regular season and exist today.

I will admit I have not watched more than 10 minutes total of the playoffs this season but it is nice to see a few FM's this season for those few people that still watch this garbage.
