Fans Threaten Ovechkin

PITTSBURGH -- Channel 11 News learned Thursday that police are investigating a threat made against Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.

The Pittsburgh Penguins released the following statement just before 4 p.m.: "We were notified of the message and immediately turned over all information to the authorities."

A short time later the Washington Capitals released this statement: "We became aware of an inappropriate comment on a message board and referred it to appropriate authorities. We appreciate their diligence and have every confidence in our club's safety."

The Capitals star forward has scored in every game in the playoff series against the Pens, including the first goal in Wednesday night's game.

The Penguins and Capitals are set to play Game 4 Friday night in Pittsburgh.

Channel 11 reporter Marc Willis will be talking with police about the threat.

Is it possible for a playoff series to become overheated? We may very well have reached that point in the second round clash between the Capitals and the Penguins, now that a local television station in Pittsburgh is reporting that police there are investigating a death threat against Washington winger Alex Ovechkin.

As first reported by Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy, the threat was posted on the Penguins' own official team message board, something that was first detected by some Washington fans on May 4.

In response to Thursday's story, the Capitals have issued the following statement:

"We became aware of an inappropriate comment on a message board and referred it to appropriate authorities. We appreciate their diligence and have every confidence in our club's safety."

The Penguins issued a similar statement, saying, "We were notified of the message and immediately turned over all information to the authorities."

As Wyshynski pointed out, it isn't out of the ordinary for fans to lose their cool and to share their anger publicly, but in a league where Columbus goalie Steve Mason was the subject of an actual death threat, authorities have little choice but to take such threats seriously.
