"Amnesty Clause" Buy-Outs By Adam Proteau

some good choices

Quote:
There remains talk among some NHL agents that the league’s next collective bargaining agreement will include a provision allowing the opportunity for each team to “amnesty” one unwieldy player contract from its salary cap books without any penalty other than the financial buyout itself.

If the season ended today, which 30 NHLers should be most worried? And what’s the likelihood each franchise actually uses the amnesty? Those questions and no more are answered below. (For brevity’s sake, we’ll do 15 teams in alphabetical order this Thursday, and the following 15 next Thursday.)

i think the nba just added this to their cba. its probably a good idea to teams who have handed out some humongous big contracts.

What if the player doesn't agree to the buyout? Or do they have a choice?

Nope, and to add to that, Montreal would be able to trade Tomas Kaberle to a team that has a player that is a cheap buy-out, Montreal then could put that player on waivers, while the other team that got Kaberle can use him as an Amnesty buy-out, you are going to see alot of back room deals if this goes through....

If they give GM's a way out of a dumb deal then all you will see is more dumb deals followed by even more dumb deals, make these Gm's live a long time with the first dumb deal so they have plenty of time to realize what they did wrong.

it's a one-time buyout, not multiple so the dumb deals will still come, but once they use it (the clause), they are stuck with the bad deal unless they can find some sucker to take it. coughmontrealcough

If you were dumb enough to acquire someone with a huge cap hit who isn't worth it, tough crap. Deal with it and learn from it.
