Wings Acquire Calder In Three-Way Deal

Detroit Red Wings acquired forward Kyle Calder in a three-team deal that saw forward Jason Williams leave Motown for the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night.

The three-way trade also included the Philadelphia Flyers obtaining defenseman Lasse Kukkonen from Chicago.

The Flyers sent Calder to Chicago for a 2007 third-round draft pick and Kukkonen before the Blackhawks then sent Calder to Detroit for Williams.

Calder was a big disappointment in his first season with the Flyers, scoring nine goals and 12 assists in 59 games. But the Red Wings receive a very talented young forward in Calder, who has the speed to keep up with Detroit's quick group of forwards.

Calder had 26 goals and 33 assists in 79 regular-season games for the Blackhawks last season, leading the team in goals, assists, points and game-winning goals.

Kukkonen has five goals and 14 points in 54 games for the Blackhawks this season. He was second on the team in blocked shots with 98. Over parts of two seasons with Chicago, Kukkonen has five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 64 regular season games.

Williams had 11 goals and 15 assists in 58 games with the Red Wings this season, and was a part-time player in Detroit's quest for the Stanley Cup in 2002.

For his career, he has 49 goals and 67 assists in 233 games, but he's slumped this season, particularly after a mammoth collision with Edmonton's Raffi Torres on Nov. 8. The hit sent Williams to the hospital. Since then, Williams has been limited to eight goals and 10 assists in 43 games.

Haha is this the toughness the Wings were looking to add?

why the hell would the wings get rid of Williams for Calder? that is a horid trade IMO. I really dont even want to see Calder play another game. Blackhawks got the best of it IMO.

I'm guessing that this is the first of a couple of moves the wings will make, but who knows with Ken Holland.

It's probably worth point out this guy is a +5 on a bad team. Sounds like he is good in his own end. Good trade. The Flyers are doing a real good job of rebuilding IMO.

I don't really see why Detroit would go for Calder. Philly does okay getting that much back for Calder I think. Kukkonen seems solid on the blueline.

Good to get rid of Calder even if his paly was picking up. He had the most abyssmal start I've seen and of course he was making waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much $$$. If Kukkonen is any good that just icing on the cake.

This is a horrid trade for the Red Wings. However, this trade happened for one reason with Williams- Babcock and Jason Williams do not like each other one bit.
