Wild Re-Sign John Scott

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota Wild Acting General Manager Tom Lynn today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has re-signed defenseman John Scott to a one-year, $550,000 contract.

Scott, 26 (9/26/82), recorded one assist and 21 penalty minutes while averaging 9:14 time on ice/game in 20 games with the Wild in 2008-09. He made his NHL debut Jan. 3 against Detroit and registered his first NHL point, an assist, March 15 at St. Louis. The Wild went 10-5-5 with Scott in the lineup. The 6-foot-8, 258-pound native of St. Catharines, Ont., recorded four points (2-2=4) and 111 PIM in 44 games with the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2008-09. Scott played college hockey at Michigan Tech.

Scott was originally signed as a free agent by the Wild on December 31, 2006.

Good start for the new GM.

Whats Boogey's contract status? Isn't he a UFA? This is a pre-emptive move in case they lose Boogaard. Good signing for the Wild, things are looking up!

He does have one more year left on his deal, according to his page on Rotoworld.

CONTRACT INFO: Cap Hit: $950,000. 2008-09: $850,000. 2009-10: $1.25 million. 2010-11: UFA

What the re-signing of Scott may do is allow whomever is Minnesota's coach this season to alternate Scott and Boogey on a nightly basis.

Haven't hired the new GM yet. The assistant GM is the acting GM until they hire someone else.

Good signing indeed.

But a replacement for Boogaard he is not.

Now let's get a couple of legit goal scorers on this squad...

3 GREAT moves since season's end. Love this guy because of his size and he knows his place on this team. He has acknowledged that for him to be effective he has to work on his fighting, and must keep sticking up for teammates the way he was when he was up here. He should improve on his fighting, but I wouldn't expect him to take away playing time from Boogie, The days of an enforcing D-man are over, so he is just riding shotgun for Boogs.

Don't get me wrong. I love Scott for his fighting. What he has to work on is his defense. (i.e. Alex Henry)

Don't think? In overall skills, just fighting ability or both?

Definitely not in fighting, Scott probably is a better skater.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.
