Wild Place Matt Kassian on Waivers; Activate Jared Spurgeon off IR

The Minnesota Wild has taken defenseman Jared Spurgeon off of Injured Reserve and placed forward Matt Kassian on waivers.

The 23-year-old blueliner has missed the last nine games with a lower body injury suffered in a game against the Nashville Predators on Jan. 22. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta, has tallied one assist in three games with Minnesota this season and owns 36 points (7-29=36) in 126 contests with the Wild.

Kassian, 26, has not appeared in a game this season. The 6-foot-4, 232-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta, has scored two goals and racked up 67 penalty minutes (PIM) in 28 career matches with Minnesota.

Hope the Habs nab him, I thought the Wild did Kassian wrong this year.

You better take him Bergevin! Money for nothing and a tough guy for free.

Habs or some team in the east will most likely grab him.

Kassian might be just what the Rangers need. Only problem would be if they claim him Tortorella would figure out a way to not use him like any other decent fighter he has ever coached.

Great. I guess the Wild will roll with a 33 year old punching bag, and a serial hug specialist.

As much as Montreal could use him, I really want to see Calgary, Vancouver, or Edmonton pick him up. That way he can come back and punish the Wild. Hopefully for Matt's sake he gets picked up though, he deserves a legit shot at the NHL.

With nobody to fight other than Bordeleau and Boll in the west.. I can't see anyone claiming him out west. Montreal or the Rangers I suspect.

About f'in time...numerous teams could use him. Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, NYR, Washington come to mind...would love to see the Bruins pick him up though...

That's my guess, too. Basically there's only Bordy, Reaves, Boll, Bollig, Biz, Rupp, and Pelech if he stays up. Nothing too impressive, and not many of those guys will goon it up without being provoked, so its not likely that any GM's feel the need to counter them. I still want to see what Kass could do with a little ice time. He's pretty good along the boards, and has decent hockey sense. I could honestly see him picking up 10-15 points a season in the right system.

Reaves isn't likely to fight him most nights though, nor is Boll or Rupp imo.
