Wild Assign Wellman and Khudobin To AHL
The Minnesota Wild sent four players to the Houston Aeros today. While three of the assignments were expected, one came as a minor surprise. Defenseman Drew Bagnall and winger Matt Kassian had already learned of their demotions on Tuesday while the team was in Finland, and Anton Khudobin's fate was sealed when the Wild acquired goaltender Jose Theodore last week.
The surprise move was assigning Casey Wellman to the Aeros, when it appeared he had made the team and played in Friday's 2-1 shootout loss to Carolina. The move leaves one extra roster player, but with Marek Zidlicky currently injured, the Wild will not have any extra skaters. Fortunately, the team won't have another game until Thursday so it's entirely possible that Wellman or another player will be recalled by then. None of the four players will be in the Houston lineup tonight against Oklahoma City. The Wild made one other expected move today, sending goaltender Dennis Endras to the Augsberger Panthers of the German League. The Wild will not practice until Monday, but Theodore is expected to be at Xcel Energy Center to get some on-ice work with several players firing pucks at him.
