Vancouver Signs Raffi Torres to One-Year Deal

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed forward Raffi Torres.

Torres, 28, split the 2009-10 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Buffalo Sabres. He registered 31 points (19-12-31) in 60 games with Columbus and five points (0-5-5) with Buffalo. He collected two points (0-2-2) and 12 penalty minutes in four playoff games with Buffalo.

The 6’0”, 218 lbs. left winger has registered 182 points (98-84-182) and 312 penalty minutes in 432 games played with the New York Islanders, Edmonton Oilers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Buffalo Sabres.

The Toronto, ON native played for Team Canada at the 2001 World Junior Championships, registering five points (3-2-5) in seven games and helping Canada capture the bronze medal. He was originally drafted fifth overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders.

If it is 1 yr and 1 mill, I like this signing for our 3rd line.
Was on pace for 20+ goals last season with Columbus, and is only 29 yrs old.

That's a solid addition for 1 mill.

The Nucks are looking real good this year. Adding Torres just makes them even scarier.

Probably going to take Burrows spot on the 2nd line until he returns? The Canucks have a glut of forwards & are over the cap. Not sure what's going to happen, but someone's on the way out.

wow surprised that he went this long unsigned, he's by no means a bad player the Canucks got themselves a deal here.

Yeah, but they need a goalie who can win in the playoffs as Luongo has proven year after year he's not a playoff goalie. $10 million for a regular season Dan Cloutier.

With Salo and Burr both on LTIR the Nucks are easily under the cap. With 12 forwards and 8 NHL dmen signed, in fact they are nearly 2mill under the cap without Burr and Salo who will both miss significant time to start the year.

He's a decent player when he's healthy, but he was unsigned because he never finishes a season... the guy is a walking time bomb.

Don't get me wrong, I love Torres... but he's made of glass.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

The Vancouver Injured Reserves

In all honesty, it's a good signing by Vancouver. Of all the teams Raffi...

Ahhh, another bastard player I despise on the Nucks, and for that, I like the deal.

I hated Torres with a passion when he was an Oiler - always love it when player you dislike end up coming to your own team.

Anyhow, there's a very good chance the Canucks have found that missing piece to their third line puzzle today - and the fact he can jump up into the top 2 lines if need be, for only 1 million bucks, has me extremely pleased with this signing. Vancouver's forwards needed more depth and grit, and if Torres can stay healthy, in shape, and motivated, he could become a big part of this team.

I don't care if he scores 20 goals or not. Just as long as he can bring a strong forecheck and some aggression to the rink on a semi-consistent basis, thats all I care about. Nice job by Gillis.
