Thrashers' Sutton Suspended for Four Games

Toronto, ON - Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Andy Sutton has been suspended for four games, without pay, as a result of being assessed a match penalty during NHL game #67 against the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 14, 2005.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Sutton will forfeit $38,775.52. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Sutton was assessed a match penalty for delivering a blow to the head of Toronto player Darcy Tucker at 9:57 of the third period.

Sutton will miss tonight’s game in New York against the Rangers, Oct. 20 against Tampa Bay, Oct. 22 against New Jersey and Oct. 25 at New York Islanders. He will be eligible to return Oct. 27 at Pittsburgh..

November 19. I'm glad Sutton only got 4 games. I was afraid the league was going to try to send another message and give him like 15-20. While I don't agree with some of the actions of the Thrash, I'm thrilled that it happened. The rematch will be the most anticipated game of the year.

It's funny how the Leafs bitch and moan when plays like this happen to them, but when they do it it's "all in the heat of the battle". In Tuesdays match-up against the Flyers on the same shift 2 Flyers players were cross-checked head first into the boards and yet no penalty was called on either play. I don't recall Hitch having a press conference calling the refs everything but a white man. Seems funny how the league suspended Sutton for his actions but yet Quinn got nothing for his little public tirade. Just seems odd IMO.The hit on Tucker was pretty blatant, but it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy

For sure a very fair outcome. And Sutton really was the only one that deserved a suspension.

LOL I don't know about all of that. That's a little overhyped.

True, the biggest grudge match of the year will be happening this time next week. Vancouver and Colorado meet for the first time--should be fun.

That was the game I was thinking of being a good one. Although, after hearing Quinn's remarks on the game, I know the rematch of these two teams will be good as well. But, I am waiting to see Colorado vs. Nucks.

I still haven't seen the hit. It sounds like Tucker has been avenged by his Karma though.

The Leafs were humiliating Atlanta in their own rink. They were something like 7/16 on the pp.....something was bound to happen, especialy with all the muscle the Thrashers have. I'm not too sure about Quinn's comments about Hartley though. I do not recall him trying anything like this while he was coaching the Avalanche. Things just got out of hand in an ugly, ugly game.

Sutton deserved what he got. He was definitley trying to put Tuckers head through the glass on that hit. I still haven't seen a clear shot of Boultons "high hit" on Lindros yet either

So, Boulton is not getting suspended for throwing down the linesman? If I am not mistaken, didn't Andre Roy get a three-gamer for similar actions a couple of years ago? The NHL needs to protect its officials in these situations.

Reason that I personally take the Leafs-Thrash game is we have the potential to see Boulton, Lessard, Exelby, versus Domi, Belak, and Perrott. Real solid lineup there. That and the Leafs should look to send a message to Boulton, Exelby, and Sutton. And you gotta figure Tucker will be taking some runs at people. With the Avs-Canucks game the only enforcer likely to play will be Brad May, who as we all know switched sides. I just don't see any potential fireworks there.

The "throwing down the linesman" seemed a little exaggerated to me. Looks like Boulton was just squirming after Belak was about to throw a punch at him. I think they just loss there balance and there was no need for a suspension.

I am surprised he only got 4 games as well. But I'm glad. I figured he'd get somewhere around 10.

If it was against a non-fighter, then it would have been a bigger suspension.
