Thrashers Recall Kevin Doell From Chicago

The Atlanta Thrashers have recalled forward Kevin Doell from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, according to Executive Vice President, General Manager and Head Coach Don Waddell.

Doell, 28, has recorded 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) and 41 penalty minutes in 33 games this season with the Wolves. He registered his first hat trick with Chicago on Dec. 15, 2007 at Iowa and has scored five goals in his previous seven games. His plus-seven rating ranks sixth on the Wolves this season.

The 5-11, 190-pound center appeared in all 80 games last season with the Wolves, registering 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) and finishing eighth on the club with a plus-15 rating. He was second on the Wolves and sixth in the AHL with four shorthanded goals and ranked fourth on the team with a career-high 107 penalty minutes. The Saskatoon, Sask. native added six points (two goals, four assists) in 15 Calder Cup Playoff games.

In 2003-04, Doell registered 74 points (33 goals, 41 assists) with the Gwinnett Gladiators, was named the ECHL Rookie of the Year and was selected to the ECHL All-Rookie Team. In 74 career games with Gwinnett, Doell recorded 89 points (39 goals, 50 assists) from 2003-05.

Prior to his professional career, Doell appeared in 158 games over four seasons at the University of Denver, tallying 136 points (62 goals, 74 assists). He helped Denver to a WCHA Championship in 2001-02, recording a team-high 43 points (20 goals, 23 assists).

Doell was signed by the Thrashers as a free agent on June, 30 2004.

Odd choice. If scoring is the emphasis of this call up, they got 3 (Haydar, Krog, and Sterling) other guys that would fill this much better. If being physical is the reason, they have 2 (Deveaux and Desbiens) other guys that are much better in this department.

Actually, Jordan LaVallee could fill in both spots. A little scoring, a little checking. I cant rationalize this one either, less he was just in the right place at the right time. Lets see though- Eric Boulton: 6-1, 220; Kevin Doell: 5-11, 190... I mean I know size aint the whole deal, but still, wouldnt you rather temporarily replace a big tough guy with a big tough kid??
