Tampa Claims Andre Roy Off Waivers, Reassigns Tarnasky

The Tampa Bay Lightning have claimed right wing Andre Roy off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Executive Vice President & General Manager Jay Feaster announced. In another roster move, center Nick Tarnasky has been assigned to the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League.

Roy, 31, has appeared in five games with the Penguins this season, recording 12 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound native of Port Chester, New York, appeared in 104 games with the Lightning between 2002 and 2004, recording 12 goals, 21 points and 260 penalty minutes.

He skated in 21 Stanley Cup Playoff games for the Lightning in 2004, recording a goal and two assists as Tampa Bay captured the Stanley Cup. Roy signed a free agent contract with the Penguins prior to the 2005-06 season.

“It was never our intention or our desire to lose Andre Roy in the first place; however, when the new CBA was put in place we knew that in a salary cap world we could not afford to match what some teams were going to be prepared to pay Andre and thus we lost him to unrestricted free agency,” Feaster said. “Having lost him we never regained that tough, physical, gritty element that Andre brings. Now, for the first time, the new CBA has helped us in that through Re-Entry Waivers we have been able to bring back a very important player to our hockey team at a salary and cap hit that make sense.

“We are thrilled to have Andre back and look forward to what he will bring to the team both on and off the ice.”

Roy began his NHL career in 1995-96 with Boston after being selected 151st overall by the Bruins at the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. After 40 NHL games with the Bruins he became an NHL regular with the Ottawa Senators in 1999-00, appearing in 193 games for Ottawa before being acquired by the Lightning in exchange for Juha Ylonen on March 15, 2002. In 357 career NHL games, Roy has recorded 27 goals, 55 points and 862 penalty minutes.

Roy split two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League between Beauport, Chicoutimi and Drummondville, appearing in 119 games and recording 43 goals, 85 points and 600 penalty minutes.

Tarnasky, 24, has appeared in 22 games with the Lightning this season, recording a goal (the first of his career), an assist and 18 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-2, 233-pound native of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta played in 12 games with the Lightning in 2005-06, recording an assist and four penalty minutes.

Tarnasky was selected by the Lightning in the ninth round, 287th overall, at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He played three seasons in the Western Hockey League with Vancouver, Kelowna and Lethbridge, recording 36 goals, 79 points and 197 penalty minutes in 150 games. He spent 2004-05 and 2005-06 in Springfield, tallying 21 goals, 40 points and 276 penalty minutes in 148 games.

Coach Torts and him never seemed to get along very well; hence him being allowed to leave Tampa a couple of seasons ago. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Wow, finally good news..
Now the Canes should recall Boulerice (if he is healthy again ) and the Panthers should get Godard back and my dreams comes true.

Re-entry waivers.

Tampa Bay only pays him 500,000 for this season and next.

Pittsburgh pays the other 500,000 of his salary for this season and next and it counts against their salary cap.

Good pick up by Tampa. Bad move by Pittsburgh.

The Pens better get Cairns back in the lineup, Thorburn is not an enforcer.

He was always a good fit for Tampa...they didn't want to lose him in the first place but they couldn't afford to match the 1 million a year contract that the Penguins threw at him.

I hope Bolts will play Roy on regular basis, so all SE division will get tougher.

Only Canes will never change...

According to the article on NHL.com the Tampa Bay GM stated, "Having lost him, we never regained that tough, physical, gritty element that Andre brings. Now, for the first time, the new CBA has helped us in that, through re-entry waivers, we have been able to bring back a very important player to our hockey team at a salary and cap hit that make sense.

"We are thrilled to have Andre back and look forward to what he will bring to the team both on and off the ice."

Hopefully these are more than just words and he gets some ice time.
