Suter & Weber Won't Re-Sign With Predators Before Trade Deadline

Quote:
OTTAWA -- The pressure is on Nashville Predators General Manager David Poile.

He has two cornerstone defensemen -- Ryan Suter, who can become an unrestricted free agent July 1, and Shea Weber, who can become a restricted free agent. Neither will sign a contract extension before the Feb. 27 trade deadline.

Instead they will wait to see if Poile can add to the roster for a playoff run, and they will reevaluate the situation after the season.

They blew their wad on a goalie!

Hasek win a Cup in Buffalo?

Kip win a Cup in Calgary?

Great teams can win a Cup with average goalies. Elite goalies dont win a Cup with average teams.

I disagree. I'll give you Niemi with Chicago - he was great during the playoffs but just happened to suck less than Leighton in the Finals. He was almost as brutal otherwise. Other than that, are you saying MAF, Osgood, JS Giguere, Martin Brodeur, and Cam Ward are all average goalies? Cam Ward may not be elite, but he certainly isn't average. Fact is you need great goaltending to win in this league, even if it's just the goalie getting hot at the right time. Ask the Flyers if average goaltending is a formula for success.

Thomas stole the Bruins the Cup last year.

Overstating the obvious, but if these guys don't get resigned, Preds are gonna get really ****ty, really fast. Don't underestimate how much having incredible d-men can prop up a mediocre goalie and pad his stats. (NJDevils17, you catching my drift? )

I like that they're using this leverage to try to get their team to improve at the deadline, but I will laugh if it's Suter that gets moved as a rental player for some of that help.

You don't wanna lose either of these guys for nothing.

Trade Suter for dynamic scoring before the deadline, if possible.

Sign Weber to a massive Doughty-like extension in the off-season.

Our system allows defense to excel, so I think we would be fine losing just one of them.

Don't they have enough cap space to sign both players?

i'd rather keep just one and use the other money on a prolific scorer

good question. in the end I think they end up with both, if they don't sign now I don't see it being a problem.

they have $31 million left in cap space as of this post...suter and weber would take up at least $15 million and then they would have to sign 7 more players with the $15 million or so.

to answer your question, yes. team budget wise, no as i doubt they will go over the $50 million they will spend this year.

wouldnt it be smarter to wait until the new CBA gets reached before signing a player anyway?

it depends because i don't see the cap dropping at all along with the gap between the max and the cap floor is reportedly gonna grow as well (right now it's 75%). so if that happens, i see one of them going as the preds are gonna be towards the bottom spending teams against the cap.

the only way i see both staying is if in the cba, contracts are limited in length and money and there is no way in hell i see the nhlpa allowing that to happen.

Yes and no they can fit it under the cap but the team has an internal salary restriction
