Stars Sign Sutherby to Two-Year Extension

FRISCO, Tex. - The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has signed center Brian Sutherby to a two-year, $1.625 million contract. The deal will pay Sutherby $775,000 for the 2009-10 season, and $850,000 for the 2010-11 NHL campaign.

"Brian has been a solid performer for us this season, and has added some toughness, size and grit to our lineup, while also possessing an underrated offensive game," said Co-General Manager Les Jackson. "We look forward to his continued development with our team the next two seasons."

Sutherby, 27, was acquired via trade from Anaheim on Dec. 14 in exchange for David McIntyre and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft. In 50 combined games with the Ducks and Stars this season, he has recorded eight goals and seven assists for 15 points with 54 penalty minutes.

The Edmonton native made his Stars debut on Dec. 23 at Toronto, and scored his first point (goal) with the club on Jan. 31 at Columbus. Sutherby collected his first multiple-point game as a Star with a goal and an assist on Mar. 3 at San Jose.

Originally drafted by Washington in the first round (No. 26 overall) of the 2000 Entry Draft, Sutherby has skated in 354 career NHL games with the Capitals, Ducks and Stars, collecting 34 goals and 43 assists for 77 points with 392 PIM. He has gone scoreless with 12 penalty minutes in 10 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The 6-3, 209-pound center had a decorated career with the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) from 1998-2002, recoding 178 points (79 goals, 99 assists) and 362 PIM in 208 games. He won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2001 World Junior Championships, earning six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in seven games.
