Clipping is clipping

Both checks are clips under the rules. Both should have caused a penalty and any subsequent action taken by the Commish is at his descretion. Whine and bitch all you want, the check was delivered at the knees, and both were intentional, DUH. See Rule 45, below.

Rule 45 - Clipping

45.1 Clipping - Clipping is the act of throwing the body, from any direction, across or below the knees of an opponent.

A player or goalkeeper may not deliver a check in a “clipping” manner, nor lower his own body position to deliver a check on or below an opponent’s knees.

An illegal “low hit” is a check that is delivered by a player or goalkeeper who may or may not have both skates on the ice, with his sole intent to check the opponent in the area of his knees. A player or goalkeeper may not lower his body position to deliver a check to an opponent’s knees.

Looks like Ott went hip to the top of the thigh on Carlo, thus negating clipping.

Just thought I'd point that out for you...

They suspended Ott for the hit on Colaiacovo? I don't even think it was that low truthfully. Granted, Ott has a decent rap sheet, but this hit was nowhere near as bad as the one Scuderi threw on Chimera.

And actually, the Ott's knee-on-knee collision with Crombeen in the same game as this incident was much more deserving of a suspension than him upending Colaiacovo. But once again I just don't understand the logic, or lack thereof, being used by Colin Campbell when he hands out his decisions or even makes public comments.

the truth is i think the double standard involves the head check on David Booth by Mike Richards. I know that Richards isn't a dirty player by any sense of the term, but his hit is (IMO) far worst then that little hip check on china glass Carlo.

low hip check by Rob Scuderi on Jason Chimera = fine
hip check by Steve Ott on Carlo Colaiacovo = 2 game suspension
hit to the head by Mike Richards on David Booth = NOTHING!

yeah that is called fair.... a similar hit by say Sean Avery results in a 5 gamer for it, whether or not he has a history or is a repeat offender.

EXACTLY -- are we trying to take hip checks out of the game??? WTF a suspension for this -- pure joke.
Knee contact on Crombeen could be debated and deserved more of a look than this hip check. This is making NHL look very poor here Commish.....

Have you ever seen Sean Avery throw an open ice hit like the one Richards threw on Booth? Avery doesn't have the skill to do so.

As Kingpin pointed out, the Ott and Scuderi hits broke the rules, the Mike Richards hit did not. That's why Scuderi got fined and Ott got suspended (repeat offender).
