Stars Exercise Club Option on Jon Klemm's Contract

FRISCO, Tex. – Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has exercised the club option on defenseman Jon Klemm’s contract for the 2006-07 season.

“Jon has provided veteran leadership to our hockey club during his two seasons in Dallas and we are pleased to have him back,” said Armstrong. “We like the stability he brings to our defensive unit through his strong, positional play and his capability of blocking shots.”

Klemm, 36, played in 76 games with the Stars last season, tallying four goals and seven assists for 11 points with 60 penalty minutes. He also led the team in blocked shots (161) and appeared in all five playoff games against Colorado, posting one goal.

The 6-2, 200-pound defenseman was acquired with a fourth round pick in 2004 from Chicago in exchange for Stephane Robidas and a second round pick in 2004 on Nov. 17, 2003. After being acquired by Dallas in 2003-04, he played in 58 contests and collected two goals and four assists for six points with a +16 rating.

A veteran of 713 career NHL games, Klemm has registered 41 goals and 98 assists for 139 points with 402 penalty minutes over his 13-year career. Serving as a an alternate captain with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2001-2003, Klemm recorded his best offensive season in 2002-2003 when he tallied 42 points (12-30-42) in 65 games. Prior to signing as a free agent with Chicago, he appeared in parts of three seasons with the Quebec Nordiques from 1991-1995. When Quebec relocated to Colorado, Klemm appeared in six full seasons with the Colorado Avalanche from 1995-2001, winning two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche in 1996 and in 2001.

This means Dallas will not resign Willie Mitchell I bet. Too bad.

Dallas now has Boucher/Zubov, Klemm/Daley, Robidas/Modry with Niinima as a spare.

Not exactly a cup run caliber blue line. Me no likey.
