Stars Acquire Sutherby From Anaheim

FRISCO, Tex. - The Dallas Stars announced today that the club has acquired center Brian Sutherby from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for center David McIntyre and a conditional sixth-round pick in 2010. The club also re-assigned defenseman Dan Jancevski to the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League.

Sutherby, 26, has skated in 17 games with Anaheim this season, recording three goals and three assists for six points with 19 penalty minutes and a +6 rating. The 6-3, 209-pound center has appeared in 321 career NHL games with Washington and Anaheim, recording 68 points (29 goals, 39 assists) and 357 penalty minutes. He has gone scoreless in 10 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, including five against Dallas in the 2008 Western Conference Quarterfinals.

The native of Edmonton, Alta., had his most prolific NHL season in 2005-06 with Washington, when he notched 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points in 69 games. He served as alternate captain for the Capitals in 2006-07, and was dealt from Washington to Anaheim in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2009 Entry Draft on Nov. 19, 2007.

Originally selected by Washington in the first round (No. 26 overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Sutherby won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2003 World Junior Championships. He skated for Moose Jaw (WHL) from 1998-2002, leading the Warriors in scoring during the 2000-01 season with 77 points (34 goals, 43 assists) in 59 games.

McIntyre, 21 (2/4/87), is competing in his junior season at Colgate University of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). In 14 games thus far, the 5-11, 190-pound forward has collected a team-leading 5-7=12 points with 22 penalty minutes (PIM). He also leads the Colgate Raiders in assists and is tied for sixth in ECAC scoring. A native of Oakville, Ontario, McIntyre ranked second with the Raiders and tied for fourth in the ECAC with 15 goals in 2007-08. He finished third on the club in scoring during his sophomore season while also being named the Inside College Hockey National Player of the Week on Mar. 17, 2008.

Selected by Dallas in the fifth round (138th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, McIntyre has appeared in 93 career ECAC games with Colgate, recording 20-24=44 points with 60 PIM. He placed third in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League (OPJHL) with 92 points in 2005-06 and was named Newmarket’s MVP that season. He participated in the 2006 OPJHL All-Star Game as well as the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJAHL) Top Prospects Game.

Jancevski, 27, returns to Hamilton after being recalled by Dallas on Dec. 11. He has skated in 25 games with Hamilton this season, recording a goal and nine assists for 10 points with 34 penalty minutes. His nine helpers are the most of any Bulldogs defenseman this season.

The native of Windsor, Ont., has gone scoreless in six career NHL games, including two last season with Dallas. He also appeared in two games with the Stars during the 2005-06 season, and in two with Tampa Bay in 2007-08.

The 6-3, 218-pound defenseman was originally selected by Dallas in second-round pick (No. 66 overall) of the 1999 Draft. He was a member of Hamilton's 2007 AHL Calder Cup championship club, recording 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists) in 22 games en route to the title.

Decent player, good MW fighter, solid replacement for the clown known as Avery.

Fast replacement player by Avery and good MW fighter too. Seen some him fights Washington and etc... Better player than Avery. Good addition of Dallas roster.

Definitely not a better player than Avery, probably on par as a fighter. Still, by all accounts Sutherby is a good teammate, making this an improvement by the Stars.

I like this move for the Stars, not so much the Ducks. When the Ducks picked up Sutherby I felt he was a great addition to their 4th line, which has been great this year. I don't see this trade being made if Burke is still in charge

Avery is by far the better player, and not to different at fighting skills either

I am not following a connection between Sutherby (a defenseman, and a "no nonsense" kind of player) and replacing Avery. I think this is purely Hull realizing that bigger forwards were having their way with the Stars, and him hoping Brian provides some help in that area.
Sutherby is a center.

He's from Edmonton, so technically he's a "centre"... close enough though.

This will add a little more toughness especially when Ott returns. The stars have gone 6 straight games without a fight and could go longer since they lost almost all thier fighters (Ott, Morrow, Crombeen, Avery)

The way the 4th line has played in the last games either May or Sutherby would had to go. The Duck already said that they will not split the line up, Parros-Carter-Ryan because they have been great.

Also the Ducks needed the cap space because they will make a move very soon for a good center, and i dont mind having Avery but not with his current salary
