St. Louis Blues Sign Doug Weight
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today the club has signed free agent center Doug Weight to a multi-year contract.
“We are bringing back a player that loves the city of St. Louis and the Blues organization,” said Davidson. “He’s a Stanley Cup winner and will be a key part of this team moving forward.” Weight, 35, will enter his second stint with the Blues. He was acquired from St. Louis by Carolina on Jan. 30, 2006 in exchange for a first round draft choice (traded to New Jersey for their 25th choice which the Blues drafted Patrik Berglund) in 2006, a fourth round draft choice in 2006 (Reto Berra) and another fourth round draft choice in 2007 along with Jesse Boulerice, Magnus Kahnberg and Mike Zigomanis. Weight played in 23 games for the Hurricanes this past postseason, registering 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) and helped guide the team to its first Stanley Cup. At the time of the transaction, the 5-11, 201-pound center led the Blues with 33 assists and 44 points in 47 games. Weight has played in 982 career NHL games, amassing 885 points (239 goals, 646 assists) along with 809 penalty minutes. The four-time all-star was acquired by St. Louis from Edmonton on July 1, 2001 and played four seasons with the Blues from 2001-2006. Weight began his NHL career with the New York Rangers in the 1991 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Detroit, Michigan native was originally drafted by the Rangers in the second round, 34th overall, in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. |
