Sharks Sign Defenseman Alexei Semenov

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Alexei Semenov to a one-year contract.

Semenov, 26, started the 2006-07 season playing for Ufa Salavat Yulayev in Russia where he posted three points (one goal, two assists) and 32 penalty minutes in 23 games. He then appeared in 23 games for the Florida Panthers, registering five assists and 28 penalty minutes. He also played in four games for Rochester (AHL).

The four-year veteran has played in 142 NHL games, posting five goals, 16 assists and 156 penalty minutes for Edmonton and Florida. In addition to his NHL totals, Semenov has posted nine goals and 14 assists and 125 penalty minutes in 122 AHL games with Hamilton and Rochester and 30 goals and 80 assists and 269 penalty minutes in 159 Ontario Hockey League games with Sudbury.

The six-foot-six, 235-pound native of Murmansk, Russia was originally selected by Edmonton in the second round (36th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Semenov played in the 2003-04 NHL YoungStars game representing Edmonton.

I hadn't realized that Semenov had learned how to skate...

I guess there's hope for me too

Good character? Have you met Boots? He's not the only criminal NHL owner... What has this league become...

Should be interesting to see what happens with Murray and Davi now.

I would bet that this is NOT an AHL signing.

Semenov left Rochester and went back to Russia after it became apparent that the Panthers weren't going to call him up last year. Of course, the Panthers needed a defenseman at the end of the season and he gladly came back... But he does not want to play in the American Hockey League. He's made that clear.

Rob Davison, Doug Murray, and now Alexei Semenov. Sounds like too many big, slow defensemen to me....

Dont forget to add in Norton to that mix. They now have basically four number 6 or seven d men. They should just stick with Davidson. He is the best all round d man in that bunch.

Davison or Semenov will be the #6 defenseman if nothing else happens. Murray's shot is pretty much gone since the Sharks re-signed Davison. If the Sharks didn't think they needed Davison, there was no point in re-signing him, but they did.
