Sharks' Ryane Clowe Suspended Pending Disciplinary Hearing on Monday

San Jose Sharks forward Ryane Clowe faces a supplementary discipline hearing Monday for an incident from a game Friday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. He is suspended pending the outcome of the hearing.

He has been offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing in the League office, which means his suspension can exceed five games, per provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Clowe was assessed a minor for roughing and a game misconduct for leaving the players' bench to start an altercation (Rule 70.6).

If it is determined he left the bench illegally, he is assessed an automatic 10-game suspension without pay and his club is fined $10,000. If he left the bench on a legal line change, he still is subject to Supplemental Discipline for doing so and then proceeding directly to start an altercation (Rule 70.2).

Chicago won the game, 2-1.

for those wondering what this is about...after shaw hit pavelski last in the game last night, clowe seemed to have jumped off the bench and started an "altercation" with shaw. nothing came of it as the stripes broke it up but this hearing is for him leaving the bench to start it.

I get it but I'm pretty sure Pavelski or another Shark came off the ice around the same time. Regardless, even if he jumped off the bench to start it, it was good enforcing because Shaw's hit initially looked dangerous. Unfortunately the zeebs broke it all up. (Hindsight Pavelski was fine and Shaw I think did let up a little). He'll get suspended for a bunch of games but I'd rather he have done that than noone do anything at all. If Pavelski would have been hurt this would be touted even more you know?

i could be wrong on this but i think it's listed in the rule book about it's still be illegal to have a legal line change and come off for that purpose of fighting. the last time i remember this was from the isles and pens (i think).

btw the "line change" wasn't made...couture looked like he was going off, but never did.

Actually I think you're right. Because Gallant got 3 games earlier this year in the AHL for that. And he didn't even "jump" a guy, they both agreed to go. (To which he tweeted me in reply to my saying his suspension was soft, saying hockey's going soft haha)

Still don't have a problem with Clowe for the move. Pavelski's one of your top players, gotta go to war for the guy anytime it looks dicy. I imagine Pelech will be enroute on a cross country trip again.

Sorry, I didn't mean that you did. I was kinda commenting on it on the side. My bad. I know what you mean with the league part obviously.

Something very similar happened with Tyler Kennedy a few years ago where he came off the bench to fight Luke Schenn. I think that was deemed to be a legal line change but he still got a one game suspension.

I'll be pissed if Clowe gets more than one game.

It was the last 10 seconds of the game so I have less sympathy for Clowe. I don't think it's worth a huge suspension but definitely needs to be addressed.

skip to 2:00

Last minute of game, Shaw boards Pavelski Feb 22...
