Sharks Land Defenseman Brent Burns
San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Brent Burns and a second round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and a first round selection (28th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Burns, 26, was named to the Western Conference All-Star Team in 2010-11, appearing in 80 games and posting 46 points (17 goals and 29 assists), which tied for 14th most amongst all NHL defensemen. Also amongst League defensemen, his 17 goals ranked third and his eight power play goals were tied for third. He set career highs in points, goals, assists, penalty minutes (98) and shots (170) in 2010-11. Playing in every situation, he averaged 2:42 seconds of penalty kill time per game to go along with his 3:03 seconds of power play time per game. The seven-year NHL veteran, all of which have come with Minnesota, has posted 183 career points (55 goals and 128 assists) in 453 games played. He has appeared in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games, posting three points (all assists). “Brent is an elite first-pairing defenseman that is just coming into his prime,” Wilson said. “We feel that he gives our blueline tremendous depth and versatility and will augment our existing core. He combines a dangerous offensive prowess with an abrasive presence in the defensive zone.” Burns has made multiple appearances with the Canadian National Team including two World Championships (2010, 2008) and one World Jr. Championship (2003-04). He was originally selected by Minnesota in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Burns played for the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League during the 2004-05 season under Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan and Assistant Coach Matt Shaw. That season, Burns posted 27 points (11 goals and 16 assists) in 73 games played. “Matt and I have a great familiarity with Brett from our time spent together in Houston,” McLellan said. “His ability to combine his elite offensive abilities with his size and defensive awareness makes him one of the top defenseman in this League and he will be for years to come.” Setoguchi has played in 267 NHL games, all with San Jose, compiling 159 points (84 goals, 75 assists). Coyle just finished his freshman season with Boston University, posting 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists) in 37 games. Last edited by Thrillhouse; 06-25-2011 at 10:23 AM. |

I loved Burns with the Wild. But, for Devin S. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YES!!!!!!
Burns at 6'5, 220ish, hes strong, very offense minded, passes and shoots whenever. He will hit and will get in scrums every now and then. Though he is veeeeeeery injury prone. Regardless, with the talent SJ has, he will easily be a top 4 D-man. Also him and Corey Perry hate each other. Him and Boogey where bro's and roomed together, im sure Boogey gave him some tips.

Burns is a gonna be a stud there in that offense in San Jose. Wild get two great players in Setoguchi and Coyle.
Fletcher and Yeo should be thrilled about this deal, as should Shark fans.

Awesome... simply awesome.
Fletcher with a brilliant deal here. Essentially 2 first rounders and a scorer to put on the top line with Koivu for a rental in Burns. He wasn't going to resign here, and instead of going the Gaborik route and getting nothing, he ships him away for a great return package. Great move. Coyle in a year or two will be able to come in and help (unless he decides to finish up at Boston). And the Zack Phillips looks like a kid that will help in the future as well, a tremendous talent from the Q. San Jose fans... its a love/hate relationship with Burns. He will hold you in disbelief with his offensive skills, but then make you want to smash your TV with his defensive gaffs. He is never serious, never holds himself accountable for his piss poor play - especially to the media or fans (if the Minnesota media, no disrespect to San Jose, but it doesn't compare to our MN hockey media, can't do it - maybe a Canadian city media is the only one possible to do it), and is NOT anything close to captain material. He'll be a great compliment to Dan Boyle for sure, and I wish him the best.

I like this trade for the Wild - I think overall they made out pretty good today - but I'm more for the prospects and picks they got then for Setoguchi himself - never been sold on him as a goal scorer. His numbers were pretty much chopped in half when he wasn't playing with Thornton anymore.
I think off-loading the injury prone Burns, landing Coyle, and securing that second first round pick that they turned into Zack Phillips were the best parts of the trade. If Burns can stay healthy and happy, he'll be a good addition to an already strong Sharks blue line - but I still think Minney won this trade by a longshot.

What makes you think that of Phillips?

Not a fan. Really dosent draw me in and his skating ability is suspect. Like was said many times after about pick 8 or 9 tonight the whole draft is crapshoot of potenital versus known comodity.

And for Zack, he'll have time to refine his stride in the minors for a year or two before even getting a sniff of the NHL ice sheet.

I like the trade for San Jose. Never been a fan of Seto, he is one of the most inconsistent players in the NHL. One day he's the best player on the ice, then he'll disappear for a week. His speed won't be easily replaceable, but not somebody I'm gonna miss a ton. Coyle is what he is, a prospect. He looks good, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over trading him until he proves he can play in the NHL. Same thing with the 28th overall. Burns gives SJ something they lacked all of this past season; a top-pairing, two-way defenseman who can spark the offense besides Boyle who played unreal minutes every game. Sharks are in win-now mode, and this trade bests help them accomplish this.
