Sharks assign McLaren, 2 Others to Worcester

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) —The San Jose Sharks on Wednesday assigned veteran defenseman Kyle McLaren to Worcester of the American Hockey League.

McLaren, who was placed on waivers on Tuesday, recorded three goals and eight assists in 61 games for San Jose last season - his fifth with the team after being acquired from the Boston Bruins in 2003.

The 31-year-old was drafted ninth overall by Boston in 1995 and earned a spot on the All-Rookie team as the youngest player in the league at age 18.

In corresponding moves, the Sharks also assigned right wings Riley Armstrong and Brad Staubitz to their AHL affiliate.

Worcester opens its regular season against the Lowell Devils on Saturday.

does Kyle have to clear waivers on his way back up to San Jose if and when they decide to call him up?

I still can't believe no one picked him up and he will not be starting in the nhl this year.

This is what I'm shocked at too. I would've thought someone could use him.
Watch him get snapped up if put on re-entry waivers tho. At $1.25M that would be a steal.

I'm with you guys who are surprised no one wanted McLaren. He'll definitely get picked up for half price on re-entry waivers if he ever gets called back up though.

Even McLaren at full price ($2.5 million) should have been claimed, IMO.

No they won't, because if they put him on re-entry waivers and no one claims him they will be on the hook for his entire salary which would put them over the cap.

What you guys aren't understanding is that McLaren has negative value. I love the guy, he was one of my favorite players on the Sharks for awhile, but he hasn't played a full season in I don't know how long, he's getting really slow, his big hits are dwindling down every year, and he's often out of position. There is not a team out there that will pick up McLaren for $2.5 mil.

In the meantime, Staubitz is back to Worcester. Not much of a surprise, but there it is.

to think that Jeff Finger will be making 4 million or whatever his first year of that gross contract is, and Kyle McLaren could've been had for a fraction of that is nuts. God I hope Martin Skoula goes to bed each night and thanks the stars above him that there is a team crazy enough to keep him on the roster let alone pay him money.

I hear what you are saying and I agree McLaren isn't the same player he once was. However as someone else mentioned, if Jeff Finger can get paid $3.5 million, Kyle McLaren for $2.5 million is a steal. Even with that price he'd still be an upgrade on most teams top six defensemen. And there are a few teams that can afford to take on his salary.
