Sharks Add Jamal Mayers

San Jose – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed right wing Jamal Mayers to a one-year contract.

“Jamal is a fast, physical, team-first player who brings the ingredients we were looking for to this role,” said Wilson. “He is an extremely fit athlete who can kill penalties and we think he will mesh well with our group of forwards.”

Mayers, 35, split last season between Toronto and Calgary after being sent to the Flames as part of the Dion Phaneuf deal. In 71 games with the Maple Leafs and Flames, he posted 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) and 131 penalty minutes.

In 737 NHL games with St, Louis, Toronto and Calgary, Mayers has picked up 188 points (81 games, 107 assists) and 969 penalty minutes.

He has also played in 48 Stanley Cup Playoff games, all with St. Louis, and posted 13 points (five goals, eight assists) and 20 penalty minutes.

Mayers has represented his native Canada three times at the World Championships (2000, 2007 [gold medal] and 2008 [silver medal]).

The six-foot-one, 215-pound forward from Toronto, Ontario was originally drafted by St. Louis in the fourth round (89th overall) in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.

Must be the Manny Malhotra replacement... at half the price, if that even.

Not a bad depth pickup.

Decent, cheap 4th line player who will stick up for his teammates. Good signing.

They probably want to make the playoffs. Calgary was on a pace to make the playoffs last season, acquired Mayers and then didn't make it. Has any team made the playoffs with him in the lineup, just asking because it's so difficult in the NHL to make the playoffs.

I think 5 years in row with St. Louis 1999-2004.

Nice pick-up by the Sharks.

Mayers is a great tough guy. He plays physical and has proven himself to be a pretty damn good fighter. He is getting older now, so thats why to was for 600 K, but he provides good vetern leadership along with being a very tough player

Not a bad signing for the Sharks. He'll bring some toughness in limited minutes at a good price. Good luck Jammmmmer

Good to see Mayers find a home for next season - after the way last year went for him, I thought that might be it for him. Hopefully a fresh start in San Jose will do him some good and he'll be just as active as ever with the Sharks. Always liked Mayers - good guy.
