Shanahan Exploring Other Teams

Quote:
One of the last prominent free agents in the NHL is available for hire, as the New York Post reports that veteran winger Brendan Shanahan has informed his agent to explore playing options other than the New York Rangers.

"I've told (agent) Rick (Curran) that I can no longer wait and that it's time to move on," Shanahan, told The Post.

"Until now, Rick has been under instructions to tell inquiring teams that my focus was on re-signing with the Rangers, and that I was not accepting any other offers. That has changed."

Shanahan, 39, previously said he would only play with the Rangers this year, but the team never came close to signing him because of salary cap issues.

Shanahan scored 23 goals and 45 points last season, and has 650 goals and 1,340 points in 1,490 career NHL games.

Apparently St. Louis and New Jersey expressed intrest in him. I know he approached the Pens in the off-season but they said no thanks. I hope that mindset has changed.

It'll be interesting to see where he ends up - I can't see him playing anywhere out west at this stage of his career.

I could see him being real effective in New Jersey.

No cap room for him in Jersey, and he doesn't fit in anywhere unless they sign him and trade a couple guys away. The Devils are stacked at left and right wing and will be even moreso once Rolston and Holik are back from injury. They currently have two wingers filling in at center in Zubrus and Rupp. So you have Gionta, Elias, Zubrus, Langenbrunner, Parise, Clarkson, Pandolfo, Rupp and Vrana as an extra along with Leblond if he stays up as an extra forward when the lineup is healthy. I don't think he fits in very well at all.

If he was signed to play Samuelsson's "role", which is shoot the puck anytime you cross the blue line and play with all-star quality line mates... he'd probably have a 30 goal season. And he can also play Samuelsson's role as wannabe tough guy, except that he might actually be taken seriously.

For a second, I was thinking Kjell or Ulf.

As is we don't need him, and i think we'd rather keep the cap room for someone who might stay more then one season... we already have what 10 potential free agents (RFA and UFA) coming up at season's end? Not time to dish out what little cap money left on this guy, even though i like his style. He turned us down to sign with the Rag Dolls and now was expecting to be resigned, instead the Rag Dolls spent on Naslund and Redden? lol, the smarter money would have been on Shanny hands down... Shanny is more of a player then Markus can ever be.

I love Shanahan but that last statement is ridiculous, Shanahan is 39 and showing every bit his age. He was exposed in last year's playoffs as being old and slow and the Rangers needed to get away from that. Naslund may not be a 40 goal scorer this year but he's only 35 and is a much much faster player than Shanahan. With Gomez and Drury on that team the Rags have plenty of leadership, and Shanny's one or two fights a year can easily be replaced by Voros who is already having a career year.

I hate to admit it but the money the Rangers spent on Naslund and Voros instead of Shanahan helped to balance them out much better.

I agree, the Rangers are better off without him.

I heard Shanny and the Blues have had some talks. He's still pretty popular guy in St Louis.
