Senators Sign Redden to Two-Year Deal

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler announced today the re-signing of the club’s all-time defenceman leader (in games played, goals and assists), Wade Redden, to a two-year agreement.

Redden, who turned 29 this month, returns for his 11th NHL and Senators career season this September. Completing his 10th season in Ottawa in 2005-06, the native of Lloydminster, Sask., set personal career highs in assists and points, recording 10 goals and 40 assists over 65 games. He also added 10 points (2 goals and 8 assists) over nine playoff games. Redden’s career totals have him at 694 games played, 336 points (88, 248) and 466 penalty minutes during the regular season, with nine goals and 25 assists over 70 post-season games.

Last season also saw the defencemen tied for first overall in the league with the New York Rangers Michal Rozsival in the plus-minus rating with +35. Serving as an alternate team captain for his eighth season, Redden also wore the captain’s ‘C’ for four games.

Redden ranks as the Senators’ all-time top defencemen in games played games (694), goals (88), assists (248) and points (336), while overall he is second, eighth, third and fifth, respectively.

Redden has represented Canada seven times in international competitions, but took part in his first Olympic experience in Italy during the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. Canada's final ranking at the Games was 10th overall, after finishing in third place of group A in the preliminary round with a 3-2-0 record, and then losing 2-0 to Russia in the quarter-finals. He scored once and was +2 in six games.

Grats to the Sens, it's always nice to retain a good player who wants to be a part of the organization.

Good move for the Sens, but why only sign him for 2 years? I would have figured they would have signed him for 4-5 years.

Redden said he'd only stay if he felt the organization was going in the right direction, and he wasn't sure of it after this season's playoffs. Management must have made some sort of promise to change something to persuade him to stay. It will be interesting to see what exactly these changes may be.

As an Ottawa fan this is great news. IMO he was the man to be signed out of him and Chara. Now, it would be great if they can retain Chara too, but this is an excellent start.

A lot of money... But he is a great D man. IMO I do not think that they can hold on to Chara. Too much money, too much interest. Intruiging to see how this will play out.

And there go my dreams of him coming to the team that drafted him.
