Senators Sign Kuba to Three-Year Deal

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has re-signed defenceman Filip Kuba to a three-year contract extension.

Kuba, a native of Ostrava, Czech Republic, has recorded two goals, 27 assists, 24 penalty minutes and is a team-leading +8 in 54 games with the Senators this season. The 6-4, 226-pound defenceman has 236 points (57-179) and 263 penalty minutes over 585 career NHL games.

Kuba was acquired by Ottawa on Aug. 29, 2008 in a trade that saw the Senators send defenceman Andrej Meszaros to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Kuba, Alexandre Picard and a first-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft (the draft pick was later sent to the New York Islanders as part of the Mike Comrie/Chris Campoli trade on Feb. 20).

The 32-year-old was the Florida Panthers’ eighth-round choice (192nd overall) in the 1995 entry draft. He played his first two NHL seasons with the Panthers. Kuba was traded to the Calgary Flames for Rocky Thompson on March 16, 2000, but claimed by the Minnesota Wild from the Flames in the expansion draft on June 23, 2000. He played the next five seasons, from 2000-01 to 2005-06, with the Wild. He joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent in July of 2006.

3.7 million a season is being reported. A little high if you ask me.

well they split the difference. dean brown said he was lookin for 4.5 and ottawa was only willing to pay 3 million/yr. still overpaid for a decent but not great d-man.

The Woodsman 03-04-2009 10:08 AM

Good lord, 3.7 for this friggin' guy??

canuckfan 03-04-2009 10:44 AM

I think the Sens would have been better to try trading this guy for some more help up front - thats a lot of money for a very overrated d-man, imo.

The Woodsman 03-04-2009 10:53 AM

****, I am already sick of this powder puff, now I have to watch him for another 4 years??

IcePlayer 03-04-2009 11:09 AM

Good god, why have we done this? $3.7m is way, way too much.

Hopefully this was only done to lock him up and thus make him easier to trade this afternoon...I doubt it, but it'd be nice. He is not worth $3.7.

I'm worried that locking up Kuba puts Chris Neil in all the more jeopardy at this point...

Well about 10 minutes ago TSN announced that contract talks between Neil and Ottawa have broken down and in all likelihood, he'll be gone by the end of the day. So don't hold your breath as to Ottawa re-signing him.
