Senators Sign Brian McGrattan and Andy Hedlund

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler today announced the signing of forward Brian McGrattan to a two-year deal and defenceman Andy Hedlund to a one-year deal.

In his first NHL season, McGrattan finished second with the Senators recording 141 penalty minutes in 60 games. The 25-year-old also scored two goals and added three assists while averaging 4:13 of ice-time per game.

The native of Hamilton, Ont., played his first career game in a 3-2 shootout win at Toronto on Oct. 5, 2005, and notched his first career goal against New Jersey Devils’ future hall-of-fame goaltender Martin Brodeur on Nov. 19. McGrattan did not see any post-season action for the Senators.

Hedlund, 28, spent the 2005-06 season with the Krefeld Penguins of Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He led all defencemen in points after collecting 12 goals and 22 assists in 52 games.

Hedlund played the three previous seasons with Ottawa’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Binghamton Senators. He picked up two goals, 13 assists and 103 penalty minutes in 75 games during his last campaign in Binghamton in 2004-05.

In all, Hedlund has recorded seven goals, 39 assists and 259 penalty minutes in 214 AHL games through the 2002-03 to 2004-05 seasons with Binghamton. Undrafted, Hedlund had previously signed a two-year contract with Ottawa on Dec. 18, 2003.

Good move signing McGrattan. Hopefully other teams will take note and reward their toughguys (if they have one) with a new contract, or sign one if they don't!
I'm still really down on this league and am taking the wait and see approach before I get excited about anything the nhl does at this point...but this is a step in the right direction.
Nice to see at least 1 team NOT taking the Bobby Clarke approach.

great to see this signing. I'd be very surprised if it's not a one-way deal. He is an NHLer now and great to know he will be Ottawa's enforcer for at least the next 2 seasons.

McGrattan was my favorite fighter from this past year, so I'm happy he was inked a new deal.
