Senators Sign Brad Norton

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators today signed defenceman Brad Norton to a one-year, two-way NHL contract. Norton, 31, was previously under contract with the Binghamton Senators, the club’s American Hockey League affiliate. This is Norton’s first NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators and, following NHL rules, he has cleared waivers and will remain in Binghamton.

The left-handed shooter played 26 games with the B-Sens this season, recording four assists and 73 penalty minutes. The Binghamton Senators claimed Norton off waivers from the AHL’ Grand Rapids Griffinson Dec. 20, 2005.

Norton began the 2005-06 season with the professional club Jokerit Helsinki in Finland where he tallied two goals, two assists and 93 penalty minutes in 20 games.

In 111 career NHL games, the defenceman has accumulated 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and 236 penalty minutes. He has also tallied 58 points (nine goals, 49 assists) and 487 penalty minutes in 210 AHL games with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Hershey Bears and Binghamton.

The Cambridge, Mass., native was named to the PlanetUSA squad at the 2000 AHL All-Star Classic in Rochester, N.Y., while he was a member of the Bulldogs. Norton was Edmonton’s ninth choice, 215th overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.

They already had him under contract in Binghamton. This is an insurance signing so they can bring him up in the playoffs if there is an injury.

Neil, Chara, McGratton and Norton on the ice at the same time would surley intimidate.

Gratts is a forward, Norton a D. So unless they're playing an extra d-man, then no.
As posted above, it's an insurance move. I'd like to see him play though.
