Senators Recall Matt Carkner

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators today recalled defenceman Matt Carkner from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.

Carkner, 28, has scored one goal and added 10 assists while recording 70 penalty minutes in 24 games this season with Binghamton. The native of Winchester, Ont., is in his second season with the B-Sens, after recording 10 goals, 15 assists and 218 penalty minutes in 67 AHL games in 2007-08.

He has played in one career National Hockey League game, recording an assist and two penalty minutes for the San Jose Sharks in a 4-3 home loss to the Calgary Flames on Feb. 6, 2006.

Carkner appeared in two pre-season games for the Senators this season, recording no points and seven penalty minutes. In one pre-season game in 2007-08, he recorded five penalty minutes.

No kidding, eh Viper? This news has made my day.

Any word if he will play D or up front? I assume he is going to replace either Lee, Picard or Bell, but we know he can play forward, too. With Ruutu's suspension, maybe he is Ruutu's replacement up front. You think they would have recalled Z. Smith or Zubov if that were the case.

This must be Ottawa's response to the Leafs getting May.

It's great news man, it's brought a smile to my face.

Well I was thinking he would replace Ruutu, but like yourself I would have thought Smith or Zubov would be in there first, but i'll go with replacing Ruutu.

Place your bets!!!

So Thornton vs. Carkner, Neil vs. Looch?? Will Milan step up to the plate? Should make for a more entertaining game for sure!

Yeah, I think big Matt will take someone on, finally something to look forward to in a sens match.

Milan didn't practice today with an undisclosed injury. Hopefully he is ready to go for tomorrow night.

Finally, someone to help with the tuff stuff and give Neil a break. With Bass out and Ruutu being a puss, they needed some muscle and hopefully Carkner can stick.

With the way Ottawa is playing this year, they need someone else who can bring life to the team. Carkner should do exactly that. It's likely both too little and too late, but as a fight fan I think we can all agree on the "better late than never" adage. He'll be looking to make an impact hopefully he'll find Thornton at some point.

Finally the Sens have a legit heavy to take the load off Neil's shoulders. I like Carkner, as he's a pretty good enforcer. He's big and tough and should do a good job. I just hope he stays in Ottawa for a while. It's great to hear that he got called up, because Neil could use the help, and Ottawa needed more toughness.

Great news for Senators fans. Let's hope he impresses early, because I'm skeptical how long he'll stay with the big club, especially once Ruutu is back from his suspension.
