Senators Recall Matt Carkner
OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators today recalled defenceman Matt Carkner from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.
Carkner, 28, has scored one goal and added 10 assists while recording 70 penalty minutes in 24 games this season with Binghamton. The native of Winchester, Ont., is in his second season with the B-Sens, after recording 10 goals, 15 assists and 218 penalty minutes in 67 AHL games in 2007-08. He has played in one career National Hockey League game, recording an assist and two penalty minutes for the San Jose Sharks in a 4-3 home loss to the Calgary Flames on Feb. 6, 2006. Carkner appeared in two pre-season games for the Senators this season, recording no points and seven penalty minutes. In one pre-season game in 2007-08, he recorded five penalty minutes.

With the way Ottawa is playing this year, they need someone else who can bring life to the team. Carkner should do exactly that. It's likely both too little and too late, but as a fight fan I think we can all agree on the "better late than never" adage. He'll be looking to make an impact hopefully he'll find Thornton at some point.

Finally the Sens have a legit heavy to take the load off Neil's shoulders. I like Carkner, as he's a pretty good enforcer. He's big and tough and should do a good job. I just hope he stays in Ottawa for a while. It's great to hear that he got called up, because Neil could use the help, and Ottawa needed more toughness.
