Senators' Nick Foligno Fined for Illegal Check
TORONTO – Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno has been fined $2,500 (the maximum permitted under the Collective Bargaining Agreement) as a result of an illegal check to the head on Patrick Dwyer of the Carolina Hurricanes in NHL game #43, October 14, the National Hockey League announced today.
"While there was no injury as a result of the hit, it is clear that Foligno delivered a shoulder check from the blind side that made primary contact with Dwyer's head," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "It is also clear that Foligno was delivering the hit in an attempt to get the puck. Finally, in determining that a fine was the appropriate discipline for this incident, I took into account that Foligno has not been suspended previously by the League." The incident occurred at 6:16 of the third period. There was no penalty assessed on the play. |

Should have fined the guy who made the suicide pass. This is a clean hit, but these types of hits continue to get punished, so there is no surprise to see more of it here. If Dwyer got injured at all instead of popping back up, Foligno would have gotten 5 games. He's just lucky it wasn't Neil who caught him in that position, 'cause they might still be collecting bodyparts.

I have absolutely zero problem with this hit. No way should Foligno be fined, or penalized in any way. The fact that there was no call on the ice with four officials looking right at it should speak volumes. The FS Carolinas guys (Canes' broadcast) were screaming about the blindside rule. I'm sorry, but hits like Foligno's should ALWAYS be legal in hockey. It's not Nick's fault that Pat Dwyer was more concerned about counting the ruts in the ice and the spots on his laces than he was about his actual immediate surroundings. Nick saw man and puck and Nick separated man from puck. Basic defensive hockey, and because of it he's hit for 25 large. Disgusting.

The reason he wasn't suspended was because it was a North-South hit, rather than an East-West. If a guy's coming up the middle with his head down, he should get hit.
I really don't understand the fine here, but who cares? Foligno probably found $2500 in his couch.

Oh what a punishment...2,500$ for Foligno are like 25$ for a normal worker.
What's the point of such a fine?
