Senators Land Goaltender Ben Bishop

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has acquired goaltender Ben Bishop from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Ottawa’s second-round draft pick in the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Bishop, 25, has spent the entire 2011-12 season with the Peoria Rivermen, the Blues’ American Hockey League affiliate. Bishop has a record of 24-14-0 in 38 games with the Rivermen, posting a league-leading six shutouts, a 2.26 goals-against average and .928 save percentage. Bishop's 24 wins are also tied for the AHL lead.

The 6-7, 215-pound native of Denver was named 2012 AHL All-Star Classic most valuable player after stopping 10 of 11 shots in the third period and leading the Western Conference to an 8-7 shootout victory. He was also named Reebok top goaltender during the All-Star Classic’s skills competition.

Bishop has appeared in 13 career NHL games, all with St. Louis, posting a 4-5-1 record with one shutout, a 2.83 goals-against-average and .893 save percentage. He was drafted by the Blues in the third round (85th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

He is well over 6 feet right? I've seen him start against Calgary once or twice, and always looked unstoppable at many points.

He's 6-7 according to hockeydb.com.

If that's all it took to get Bishop, how did Burke miss the opportunity? Shaking my head...

Yzerman said he wasn't comfortable with giving up a 2nd for him. I guess Burke felt the same way.

That would mean that not giving up that 2nd is more important than all the effort put into this season.

Burke could use 2nd round pick to draft a forward, throw that forwrd in net, and things would be more stable between the pipes for us than they are right now.

I have without a doubt a very good feeling Bishop is going to be a gem in Ottawa.

He always played well against the Wolves. I'm really surprised a 2nd rounder is all that it took to get him.

He's an AHL goalie... with Craig Anderson, Alex Auld and Robin Lehner, and now Ben Bishop, you have 4 AHL level goalies...

Good to see big Ben get a chance with another team. Would've liked to see the Blues get a player we could use now, but with the team in ownership limbo, good trade.
