Senators Ink Phillips to Three-Year Extension

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has extended Chris Phillips’ contract three years through to the 2013-14 season.

Phillips, 32, has spent his entire National Hockey League career in Ottawa and is only the second Senator to reach the 900-game mark (Alfredsson - 1,056). In 13 NHL seasons, he ranks second on the club in all-time games played (925), 18th in goals (60), ninth in all-time assists (173) and second in penalty minutes (655).

“We’re pleased to announce the signing of Chris Phillips to a three-year extension,” said general manager Bryan Murray. “Both on and off the ice, Chris embodies what we want from a Senators player, and we’re proud that he’ll remain a Senator for life.”

An alternate captain for the last five seasons, Phillips has played in all 62 games this season, recording one goal, four assists and 32 penalty minutes. Since 2006-07, he has missed one of the Senators’ 388 regular-season games and played in all 39 post-season meetings.

The Calgary-native has also added six goals, seven assists and 80 penalty minutes in 97 career playoff games. He was the first overall pick by the Senators in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Id say those 2 will definitly be moved. Amazed he got a no movement clause though. Cant be any worse then Brett Clark getting a NTC though.

I'm not surprised... It's not ideal, but Murray hands them out indiscriminately, so... Phillips may have left about $1M per season on the table to stay. I wonder if Murray could have moved him for some value before guys like Beauchemin were traded. Too late now. I am glad we're not losing him for nothing in the Summer, but I am starting to question his desire to win.

This reminds me of the Sundin saga. Leafs fans wanted him to go and get traded to bring back some pieces and then resign in the summer. I really thought Phillips would take the trade and then come back and sign in the summer.

I applaud him though for wanting to stay in one city for his whole career. Very rare to see that these days.

Was Phillips being shopped??If he was.I'm guessing the return wasn't what Ottawa was looking for.Not a bad deal.I'm interested to see what the Sens are going to do with Neil.

The story being circulated through the local media was that, if he tried that Keith Tkachuk style, there was no guarantee of getting re-signed. Murray is in all likelyhood NOT going to be GM come July 1st, and so there was a very real chance that the new GM would not honor any promise to take him back in the summer. So, if he really wanted to stay a Senator, this was the only sure thing.

Good for both sides IMO. Phillips has always been a Senator and he should retire as one.

Phillips is pretty decent defenseman actually.

this confirms that he won't be moved, not a bad contract, not great.
