Senators' Erik Karlsson Out for Season with Achilles Injury

Quote:
Update on Karlsson: Erik suffered a laceration to his left achilles, which will require surgery to repair. He will be out indefinitely.

Erik Karlsson is injured by Matt Cooke's skate....

Obviously it's Cooke, so it'll draw tons of criticism. I just can't see the intent. Call me a homer if you'd like. Karlsson is a great player, and this is a terrible injury, but I don't think it's anything more than a freak accident.

Now you know I'm one of the biggest Cooke haters around, but there's no way in hell that was an intentional move. It looked like he was fighting for body position on Karlsson as they went into the boards, and his skate hit Karlsson's Achilles as they hit the boards. Totally a freak accident and an unfortunate injury. Karlsson's a great talent, and the Sens are going to really miss him.

At first I thought it looked like a slew foot, but it really doesn't matter. That just ruined our season. Period. I hate Matt Cooke, I think he's a piece of ****, and I think someone ought to have taken a run at him. He never got his for all the **** he intentionally caused, let karma sort itself out for this puke, whether this particular hit was an accident or not.

I wouldn't however, say someone should take a hit at one of the skill guys on the Pens, much as that might be the emotional response. It seems like these two teams always manage to brutalize each other, and it's a dangerous game to play in more ways than one. No respect going both ways. Dupuis (I think) injured Spezza a few years back, and there was that hit Sutton laid on Leopold. Do they even play again this season?

If it was a different name on the back of the jersey, no one would be questioning motive.

So even if it was an accident, Cooke should be targeted. Yea that makes sense.

Probably not. But Cooke is never going to get the benefit of the doubt and understandably so. He is a douche bag nobody around the league respects for good reason.

I feel bad for my former teammate Erik Karlsson.
He's an amazing player and a very funny and humble person. The perfect guy to have in your locker room.

Bad to see a hockey player in that much pain.

I've heard achilles injuries are one of the most painful. Hurts just thinking about getting cut there. Surgery must be complex.

going into the boards with your skates off the ice?
not saying there was intent.... but it didn't look like he was gingerly looking to place that boot back down on the ice

This was reckless, but not intentional. He shouldn't have went in with his skate off the ice. There is a difference. PK Subban did a similar thing to Jordan Staal in the playoffs a few years ago and it cost Staal about 8 months (except his skate cut ligaments in the top of his foot). I will definitely be watching now to see how many guys go into the the boards like Cooke did. I can't recall to many, but I never really looked for it either.

I was thinking that Cooke was coming in and trying to pin Karlsson against the boards since it was the end of a penalty kill, and he was trying to use his leg to pin him there. When they hit the boards Cooke's skate come down on Karlsson's achillies...I don't think there was any intent, but Cooke being Cooke and rightfully so,there will always be a very large group that will scream bloody murder..
