Senators Buy Out Contract of Jonathan Cheechoo
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today the club has bought out the contract of forward Jonathan Cheechoo.
Cheechoo’s contract was valid until the end of the 2010-11 season. "Jonathan is a quality person and hockey player," said Senators general manager Bryan Murray. "We hoped that things would have worked out with the Senators. In the best interest of us both, we have decided to move on. We wish him all the best." Cheechoo, 29, played in 61 games with the Senators in 2009-10, registering five goals, nine assists and 20 penalty minutes. He did not record a point in his one playoff meeting against the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 20. Assigned to the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, on Feb. 13, Cheechoo had eight goals, six assists and 37 penalty minutes in 25 games. The native of Moose Factory, Ont., was acquired in a trade on Sept. 12, 2009, from the San Jose Sharks along with Milan Michalek and the Sharks’ 2010 second-round pick, in exchange for Dany Heatley.
