Senators Acquire Mike Comrie
OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler announced today that the club has acquired centre Mike Comrie from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for prospect Alexei Kaigorodov.
The 26-year-old Comrie has played in 24 games with the Phoenix Coyotes this season, recording seven goals, 13 assists and 20 penalty minutes. In his last 10 games, he has three goals and five assists for eight points. Comrie has four multi-point games this season -- his last (a goal and assist) coming in a 8-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Dec. 30. In six NHL seasons, Comrie has collected 110 goals, 127 assists and 252 penalty minutes in 345 career games with the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Phoenix Coyotes. The Edmonton, Alta., native was drafted by the Oilers in the third round, 91st overall, of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He played in Edmonton from 2000-01 to 2002-03 before he was traded to Philadelphia on Dec. 16, 2003. Comrie was then traded later in the 2003-04 season to Phoenix on Feb. 4, where he has played since. Comrie's best seasons to date came first in 2001-02 when he recorded 33 goals, 27 assists and 60 points in 82 games with Edmonton. He also played in the 2002 NHL YoungStars Game as part of NHL All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles. Comrie had his second 30-goal season in 2005-06 with Phoenix, and added as many assists for another 60-point campaign. Comrie spent two seasons at the University of Michigan (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) from 1998-99 to 1999-2000, totalling 103 points (43-60) in 82 games. In his first collegiate season (1998-99), he was named CCHA rookie of the year and was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team and the CCHA First All-Star Team. In 1999-2000, Comrie was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award (as the National Collegiate Athletic Association's outstanding player) in addition to being named to the CCHA First All-Star Team and NCAA West Second All-American Team. In the short term definitely, in the long term, Alexei Kaigorodov is a great prospect. He has amazing hockey instinct. If he can adapt to the NHL, he has the potential to be a very good center.

i thought PHO should have made the Sens sweet'n the pot a little more. Maybe a draft pick or prospect along with Kaigorodov. I also didn't think PHO was in the market to trade Comrie, especially for a guy like Kaigorodov who is playing in a different country right now and will probably have NO impact on the Yotes at all this year. They must have been itching to get rid of him b/c all they did (as far as this year goes) is lose production and face-offs in this trade
also doesn't this put the Sens close to the cap? what are they gonna do come march when the trading deadline comes around? -bt

Very good pick up for the Sens. Had to know they were going to go do some shopping after Fisher and Spezza hit the shelf, didnt know they'd get this much in return for a prospect though.

I think pre-trade they had a bit more than 2 million for wiggle room. Hopefully they won't need anyone come deadline. |

This trade makes sense for both teams. Ottawa gets a center that they desperately need, and Phoenix gets a highly ranked prospect. The reason Phoenix didn't get an impact player "now" is because they really don't need one. The season is pretty much a write-off already, so why not add some pieces to the future while they can. Might even see a fire-sale coming out of Phoenix soon.

Yotes should've been able to get more for Comrie than this. They must've really wanted him gone. Kaigorodov had a much better year with Metallurg in 05 than he did in 06, and hasn't impressed this year with them or the Sens. I could see him being a flop. Hope I'm wrong.

More centers ...
That is what we need in Ottawa, more centers. Maybe what Muckler should be doing is keeping players like Havlat and Hossa instead of trading away talent. Welcome to Mucklerland, where the best deal is outside the system.

I'd take a Heatley over a Hossa anyday! Sure hossa is doing wicked but we'll see how well he does when april comes along. As for havlat, yeah I wish we could have kept him but this is a salary cap era and we couldn't fit him in, and instead of risk losing him next summer for nothing they get preissing, and some prospects.
