Since the league has started penalizing and suspending players for hits close to the boards the players no longer worry about protecting themselves. Half of them (or more) use it to draw a penalty and the other half rely on the approaching players "better judgement" to not make the hit. This way the player with the puck keeps control or makes the pass and doesn't have to worry about the approaching player. I liked the game much more when the player went to play the puck along the boards and had to keep their head up for the other player coming to hit them. When you saw somebody coming you braced yourself for the hit, then played the puck. Not just kept going about you business like they weren't going to hit you like they do now.

BTW Bruins great job of standing up for your team mates. Obviously you were going to get the 2 points anyway so why not give the Flyers a little payback....

PLEASE get rid of the instigator rule
great post. especially for post # 666!!!

Oh come on really? You guys are upset that he ONLY got 2 games?

HERES A F*ING TISSUE you pansies...

Oh i'm sorry i guess Dropping to your knees to play the puck means you get to play in cleanly without getting checked...remind me to do that tonight at my game, i'm gonna drop to my knees when stopping a puck at the blue line - hopefully no one checks me!

It was a STUPID play by alberts and a Stupid hit by hartnell...but i dont fault hartnell for doing it, he has to throw that check, if he doesnt he just let alberts play the puck, he can't worry about whether or not alberts is going to get hurt off of it, he has no choice, you have to finish your check alberts should not have been in that position that was very stupid.

I wasn't sure he'd even get a suspension, I thought the match penalty was going to be enough.
I was suggesting that if the league wants to send a message, 2 games doesn't do it. Five games means a player is lost for up to 2 weeks... that MIGHT be more reasonable than 20 game suspensions.

Nothing obvious about the 2 points. The Bruins could not afford to take a penalty, plain and simple, after killing off their first penalty of the game, the Bruins gave up three power play goals in a row. They could not afford to lose this game, at the cost of looking weak for not responding, but that was their game plan before the game even started and they stuck to it. I may not agree with what they chose to do and their lack of a response, but they will have another shot.

I agree completely, yes suspend hartnell by definition it was worth a suspension but the players are BEGGING FOR IT these days, you have responsiblitly to keep yourself SAFE out there, from day one you are told keep your head up and watch yourself along the boards, what alberts did was seriously as much his fault as hartnells.

The play was done and the puck gone when Hartnell was still 8 feet away from Alberts and then he followed through with an elbow to the head. It was dishonorable. No one on the ice saw it besides Rask, a ref, and a linesman...

Actually he hit him with his side. His elbow was above his head.

thats just a WRONG statement

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIg8_...eature=related

you can watch it in slow mo at the end...puck its alberts in the chest (What is he a f'ing goalie?) and hartnell hits him into the boards as the puck is going forward...it bounced off alberts maybe 1 second before he was hit, it wasnt late, it was an IDIOT play by alberts...and for the record I like alberts from his college days.

The point of a hit in hockey is to eliminate a player from the play. A player on his knees has already done that. The puck had already moved on. That replay shows everyone looking at loose the puck several feet up the boards when the impact was made on the player who had already been on his knees for several seconds.

They had a 5 minute major to spare. I can see them waiting till after the 5 minutes so they don't spoil the PP. But afterwards, I fully expected them to take care of business.

That may be the text-book point of a hit in hockey. But then how do you explain hits after the fact tht the play has been made. The point of the hit is to deter the opposition from taking their time with the puck, which would then result in the opposition making stupid plays..

And the point of iceskates are so you can stay on your feet...he was also still in the play several feet is nothing, maybe 3 feet ahead of him and apparently alberts CAN play the puck from his knees so he isnt out of the play, the puck could be have easilty been coming back it had traveled very little.

I dont disagree that hartnell should be suspended - fine...but as i said i dont fault him for the hit, alberts needs to play defense not goalie.

Again. It was a close enough game that with their poor penalty killing they could not afford to take a penalty. Remember that Ward responded to the hit on Chara by Eager just a few minutes before. But the the Flyers made it a 4-3 game after Savard went to the box for a crosscheck. The Flyers were making the Bruins pk look awful.
