Sabres Sign Spacek

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have agreed to terms on a multi-year deal with unrestricted free agent defenseman Jaroslav Spacek (SPAH-chek).

Spacek was a key member of Edmonton's run to the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, finishing second in scoring among NHL defenseman with 14 points (3+11) in 24 games. He was eighth overall in power play scoring (2+7), 10th in blocked shots (39), and 10th in average ice time (25:52).

Spacek (5' 11", 204 lbs., shoots left) split the 2005-06 season between Chicago and Edmonton, collecting 43 points (12+31), 96 PIM and +11 in 76 games, while averaging 23:39 of ice time per game.

He scored 24 points (7+17) in 45 games with Chicago, before being traded to Edmonton on January 26. In 31 games with the Oilers, Spacek scored 19 points (5+14). He scored points in 14 of 31 games with Edmonton, and was plus or even in 19 of 31 games.

The 32-year-old native of Rokycany, Czech Republic, has scored 205 points (51+154) in 496 career NHL games with Edmonton, Chicago, Columbus and Florida. Spacek scored a career-high 45 points (9+36) with Columbus during the 2002-03 season.

Spacek was Florida's fifth pick (117th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He has represented the Czech Republic in three Winter Olympics, winning a gold medal in 1998 and bronze in 2006.

To be honest, I don't think Edmonton's off-season is looking that much better than Colorado's.

And another blueliner who would fit in well with the what the Islanders need is off the market. And another player jettisons himself off of Edmonton. Wierd for a team to make the finals and then lose all its players.
