Sabres Sign Hobey Baker Finalist Nathan Gerbe

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced today that the Sabres have signed forward Nathan Gerbe, a Hobey Baker Award finalist who recently completed his junior season with the NCAA Champion Boston College Eagles. The Sabres selected Gerbe in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2005 Entry Draft.

Gerbe (7/24/1987, 5’6”, 160 lbs.) led the nation in scoring this season with 68 points (35+33) in 43 games, five more than Hobey Baker Award winner Kevin Porter of Michigan. Gerbe scored points in 30 of 43 games, including a career-best five point (4+1) outing at Harvard on Dec. 12/07.

In addition, Gerbe scored four points in a game on five separate occasions during the 2007-08 season. For his career, Gerbe averaged 1.08 points per game with 133 points (71+62) in 123 games.

A native of Oxford, MI, Gerbe capped an outstanding collegiate career in April when he was named Most Outstanding Player of the Frozen Four after scoring eight points (5+3) in two games – highlighted by his two-goal performance in BC’s 4-1 win over Notre Dame in the Championship Game. Gerbe tied the record for goals in a single NCAA tournament with seven, and his five goals in the Frozen Four ranks fourth all-time.

Gerbe has extensive international experience, having represented the US at the World Junior Hockey Championships (2006, 2007), and at the World Under-18 Championships (2004, 2005). Prior to attending Boston College, Gerbe spent two seasons (2003-05) with the U.S. National Under-18 Team in Ann Arbor, Mich.

I wouldn't count him out so fast as to playing with the sabres. If not he will be in rochester. He is small but can fly and in the new nhl that is the biggest asset to any player.

Saw the final game of the NCAA championships, this guy is great. He is probably the smallest guy coming to an NHL team since Theo Fleury but this kid could also put up about the same numbers as Fleury did, maybe not as many penalty minutes.

The Sabres aren't overly deep up front and they have shown already in the past that they are willing to give some rookies a chance to come in and play right away.

he wont be in rochester, their affiliation is done as of the end of their season. bitter war between them. i just dont think his game is good enough to be with the sabres right away. hell drew stafford wasnt and in my eyes was a better all-around player in college.
