Sabres Get Defenseman Robyn Regehr

The Calgary Flames traded veteran defenseman Robyn Regehr, forward Ales Kotalik and a second-round draft pick in 2012 to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday morning for defenseman Chris Butler and center ]Paul Byron.

The deal was announced just moments before the second round of the Entry Draft began at the Xcel Energy Center.

Regehr, who waived his no-trade clause, has played all 11 of his NHL seasons with the Flames. In 826 games, he has 29 goals, 163 points and 802 penalty minutes. The 31-year-old had 2 goals and 19 points in 79 games with the Flames this past season.

Kotalik, a former Sabre, split the season between Calgary and their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford. He was 4-2-6 in 26 games with the Flames. He spent his first six-plus season with the Sabres, posting career highs of 25 goals and 62 points in 2005-06.

Butler, who turns 25 in October, has played 155 games in three NHL seasons and had 2 goals and 9 points in 49 games this past season. Byron made his NHL debut with Buffalo this past season, scoring a goal and adding an assist in eight games after scoring 26 goals and putting up 53 points with the Sabres' AHL affiliate in Portland.

Too much money at 4 million a year. Darcy spends too much sometimes like what he just did with Drew Stafford at 4 million, and previously with Jason Pom at 5 million.

Its odd you say such when everyone accused him ( Darcy ) of being a cheep-skate and letting good players go/not signing big money contracts.

Buffalo could use a pair of good defenseman this year.

I agree he was a cheap skate, and It's his own fault for not signing those players before they were UFA's. I don't know what goes on behind closed doors But Drury always wanted to be a New York Ranger and he sold out big time. We should have signed Danny B but Darcy waited to long. A long term deal(5 or 6 years)with Danny would have been the right move at around 5.8 to 6.2 million. I don't know If Briere would have taken the deal because like I said I don't know what goes down on the phone with agents or behind closed doors.
IMO, including Cambell they all sold out for the big pay days. Drury or Campbell are not even worth the money their getting, way overpaid. Remember when Edmonton F%%%ed us? I would have took 4 first round draft picks for Vanek and told Edmonton to go F$#k themselves. Kevin low is a scumbag.

LMAO pull your head out of your ass bud.

It's called a Contract year, Why in the hell do you think he played so good.
I bet once he gets a taste of that 4 Million he will trail off a bit. Look at Jason Pom, he was playing with some desire but after he got 5 million a year that passion seemed to go down a bit. Honestly do you think Vanek deserves 7 million a year?

A great D man? Not really. Worth 4 Million, not in my book. Tough, bullsh&t he probably gets beat up at the bus station. Around 50 total fights, and he sure can pick his spots.

So I'm a little disappointed that your a Sabres fan

Someone said it earlier, and I agree - the sooner Regehr gets out of the NW, the better. Big eared freak. But, he can be as big and as mean and nasty as anyone out there. Strong as an oxe too.

Curious there's no names rumoured to be coming back yet. The Flames are looking to get younger, and dump some salary - they could be content to get prospects and picks back in return, especially if they want to free up $$$ to keep Tanguay around. But, if they want a younger, cheaper center to play with Igoonla, what are the odds a Roy, Pominville, or even Tyler Ennis would be made available? The latter may be asking too much for a guy like Regehr who's style of play has been catching up to his body, but still, you never know...

The Flames should have traded Iginla instead of hanging onto him until his value is none, & he just retires. Iggy can still be a great 2nd liner, but the Flames are going nowhere in the near future, so why keep him? Gut the team, & rebuild like the Oilers.

The Flames need to start axing payroll somehow. Signing J-Bo for the contract they did has really hampered any sort of rebuilding.

I hate Regehr with a passion. But, I respect his game a ton and the influence plus physical game he brings to a team is unquestioned. Not to mention the lead by example approach he has, he is well worth the $4M he's getting paid.

The Flamers are in trouble, in more ways than one, them viewing Regehr as expendable with the "depth" they think they have on the blue line is laughable.

Agreed. I'm assuming the people saying he is overpayed are simply judging him based on his statistics because Regehr is still one of the better shutdown defensemen in the league. If I was a Sabres I would be extremely excited about the potential for a Myers-Regehr pairing.

Odds? I dunno. I have a belief that EVERYTHING is on the table with the acception or 3 or 4 people whom were resigned or are long term contracts ( 3 or more years ).

Black and Pegula are calling the shots now. Black did quite well working for Mario in Pittsburgh.

Gerbe is a center and Ennis plays left wing. Luke Adam and Paul Byron are good prospects that Calgary might be interested and both are young/center men.

Still think Buffalo is the team to sign Richards.
