Sabres Acquire Craig Rivet

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Craig Rivet and the San Jose Sharks’ seventh round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for the Sabres’ second round picks in both 2009 and 2010.

Rivet (9/13/74, 6’2”, 210 lbs) appeared in 74 games with San Jose last season, picking up 35 points (5+35) and 104 penalty minutes. In 13 postseason games, he collected six assists (0+6). Rivet was an assistant captain last year with the Sharks.

“We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster,” said Regier. “He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience.”

The North Bay, Ontario native has appeared in 744 NHL games and has amassed 194 points on 45 goals and 149 assists (45+14). Rivet played parts of 12 seasons in Montreal before a trade to San Jose during the 2006-2007 season. Rivet was the Canadiens’ third-round choice (68th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.

Well, I guess the Sharks don't have Craig Rivet after all...

Two second round picks? Rivet is pretty good, but not that good. Yikes.

Sharks don't need him anymore after what they have down. They get two draft picks, I think it's a nice move by the fish.

Rivet became expendable for San Jose with the new additions to their blueline. He's a good player and the Sabres could use him, but 2 second rounders is a hefty price.

I like the Sabres in this one. Picks will more often than not turn into a bust. The way I see it, Rivet is as good as you would hope a second rounder would turn out to be.

Wow, Rivet was the the one d-man SJ could count on most lately. The guy hits, he scores, he fights when he needs to (and generally wins).

I don't get it. If Doug Wilson is building for this year, then stick to it. What is this mess of kinda trading and signing for this year, then kinda dismantling and getting picks for the future? Seems a bit muddled.

Yeah, dude this is the weirdest thing someones ever said to you.

but !!

He reminds me of that dude that always beats you, no matter how much training in the certain activity you have. Like he beats you in an arm wrestling match, although your the world champion arm wrestler.. He beats you in NHL 08 although you have played so much longer then him.

He's also your uncle who plays goalie with really small pads and doesent go down, or the one who has a crazy underhand pitch.

omg, so intimidating.

This certainly helps make up for their first move of the day. Solid move by Buffalo...I'm surprised Rivet was the guy San Jose moved to make room on the point.

I suppose you could say this is the riveting move we've been waiting for the Sabres to make?
