Ryan Hollweg Suspended Two Games

TORONTO – Toronto Maple Leafs left wing Ryan Hollweg has automatically been suspended for two games, without pay, as a result of being assessed his third Game Misconduct within 41 games in the Boarding/Checking from Behind category, the National Hockey League announced today. He was assessed Game Misconducts under Rule 44.5 - Checking from Behind, in NHL Game #619 (Jan. 5 vs. Edmonton) and Game #797 (Feb. 3 vs. Montreal) in 2007-08 and under Rule 42.5 - Boarding, in the Oct. 1, 2008 pre-season game vs. St. Louis.

According to Rule 23.5, having incurred three Game Misconducts within 41 games, Hollweg is automatically suspended for the Maple Leafs' first two regular season games of the 2008-09 season - Oct. 9 at Detroit and Oct. 11 vs. Montreal.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Hollweg will forfeit $5,510.76. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

This is of course, the one part of Hollweg's game that I will never get over. I like what he is doing this pre-season, but this suspension is well-deserved, and hopefully he will think twice about nailing a guy from behind next time.

Totally, but you know that he will never change that part of his game, he can't for some reason avoid hitting guys from behind. He seems to get too excited when he is out there and has a mental block when it comes to knowing when to hit and when not to hit a guy.

Well you can definitely see his game changing this season with the way he actually tries to back up his mouth and his play, maybe the decline of hitting from behind is in progress.

That last one against the Blues was a weak call. People get too excited themselves just because it's Hollweg throwing his weight around & we all know he's been guilty before IMO.

What I'm getting at... This suspension was bullshyt.

Oh i hear you, i like what im seeing thus far from him and i hope he can continue it. Ive always been a fan of Hollweg not for his fighting prowess but for his heart and soul type of play, if he can hold off on the hits from behind he will do fine with the Leafs and make them atleast somewhat entertaining this season.

So by process of elimination, is Matt Stajan our Enforcer to open the season? Or does seniority play a role where in that case Nic Antropov will be dropping the mitts?

Bryan Burke, fix this phuking team will ya!

He's automatically suspended for a hit from behind on October 1st, yet he was playing Oct 5th vs the Jackets. Great system the league has in place. It would have been f*cken fantastic if Hollweg blasted another guy from behind while he was in "suspension limbo." Actually, I'm kind of surprised he didn't.

I think some people are misunderstanding. He's not being punished for that specific hit in the Blues game. There was no way for the league not to suspend Hollweg because he's amassed those 3 game misconducts for boarding. All they could do was rescind one of the game misconducts to keep him from the automatic penalty. From what I saw, I agree with the 5 minute major, but if it's almost anyone else, I'm not sure it warranted a game misconduct. But when you have a reputation like Hollweg, he's going to get thrown out of the game.

He got suspended because he's a repeat offender for hits from behind. If he does it again, no matter how border line the call, he'll be suspended even longer

I mean, why can't the guy just throw a legal hit? Is that so difficult?

I remember Hollweg got suspended for 3 games in March '06 for hitting Umberger from behind.
