A Star Is Signed: 6 Years, $54 Million for Alexander Ovechkin

Earlier today, Alexander Ovechkin, accompanied by family and an attorney, walked into the Washington Capitals’ team offices in Arlington, Va., reviewed with counsel terms for a new contract with the club, and agreed to a six-year pact that will pay him $54 million.

Tomorrow, this very report will run in one Moscow newspaper, SovetskySport.

Well into next decade, Washington will be Alexander Ovechkin’s hockey home.

We’ll have more information from SovetskySport on Ovechkin’s signing later this evening.

Wow, I just read a creditable source that said Ovechkin will likely land in Montreal, with either a trade or free agency. In the article Ovechkin expressed enjoyment playing in montreal and liked the fans. It will be interesting to see what happeneds.

ok, i'm a Habs fan and i don't see this happening in any way. Montreal would have to dump quite a bit of salary to even fit this guy in the long term, and then you leave him with a familiar situation that you have in Washington, a superstar with no support.


I just hope that this signing is true and that the damn TORONTO media stops with the whole "he needs to get out of Washington" ****. Truly irritating, great signing if this comes out to be 100% accurate.

I hadn't seen the numbers, but other websites are reporting AO's signing too. I think that was to be expected. Washington would have needed to shut down the franchise if they let Ovechkin go.
