Rumor: Flames Re-Sign Langkow

http://communities.canada.com/edmont...rs-flames.aspx

Quote:
It hasn't been announced yet but Calgary Flames forward Daymond Langkow has signed a four-year $20 million, no-trade contract.
Great, lets keep ignoring how the Leafs are doing with 50 no trade clauses.

Christ. Pretty soon trading will not be happening in the NHL.

*sarcasm* but you know what I mean.

I've always liked Langkow, however, how old is he? A 4 year no-trade? Seems a little dumb.

I agree with the common sentiment. Langkow is a good player for Calgary, but an he's been around for a while and you might wanna unload the guy if you have the opportunity in a couple years. You don't know where his game or the team will be.

especially given the team is not very strong this year fighting just to make the playoffs this season.

Langkow is good don't get me wrong, but these long term no trade contracts are a little ludicrous, especially to an older player. He may like stability, but hockey is a business now.

I hope this isn't true Langkow is one of the few quality two-way centres left as a pending UFA - I was actually hoping the Canucks would take a stab at him. And it looks like Langkow was picked over Husselius, which is probably a good idea.

If it is true, the Flames have a solid, if somewhat inconsistent nucleus on tap for the next 4-5 years. But you have to think all these no-trade clauses may catch up to them before that time. They may seem like a good idea at the time, but.....

Good deal by the Flames. Langkow is a very underrated player.

Very consistent scorer so I think the 4 year deal isn't that much of a risk, Langkow is 32 years old and he actually got better in his last few seasons. They'll have him around until he turns 36 so I guess his production will keep up until his contract expires. Smart move by Sutter.

he isn't that great that he deserves a full NTC. maybe for the first 2 years of the deal but not for all of it. these NTC or NMC are gettin to be a joke (i.e. look at the leafs roster)

Report: Flames resign Daymond Langkow

Quote:
It looks like Calgary’s re-signed Langkow already at four years, $20 million — which the Wild wouldn’t have offered anyway. The Flames just can’t announce the deal until July 1 because it puts them over the $50.3 million cap, and the cap doesn’t go up until July 1 (like why the Wild and Bruins had to hold off on the Manny Fernandez trade at last year’s Draft; the trade put the Bruins over the cap until July 1).

Langkow is a good solid two-way center. IMO he isn't a top-line center, although he has played on the Flames first line with Iggy off and on the past three years. He is best suited as a second line center who plays the PP and PK. I think $5 million is a little much for a guy that has never scored a point a game in his career, but again he does play well in his own end.

I'm not too worried about the no-trade clause. If Sutter asks you to waive it, how do you say no and keep playing on his team? This isn't like the Leafs - the Flames have rock solid leadership both in the dressing room and in the front office. I understand that he can say no, but come on when Sutter says get out, you go....

Exactly.

And as a business, a contract can be worked to the benefit of those making the contract.

And if a player wants stability (which business doesn't?), then get a NTC. If a team doesn't want to hand out NTC's, that is their ability to do in negotiation.
