Riley Cote Suspended Three Games
TORONTO - Philadelphia Flyers forward Riley Cote has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of being assessed a match penalty for attempt to injure during NHL game #376 against the Dallas Stars Dec. 1, the National Hockey League announced today.
Cote was assessed a match penalty for elbowing Dallas defenseman Matt Niskanen at 17:46 of the third period. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Cote will forfeit $8,021.40. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. Cote will miss Philadelphia's next three games -- Dec. 5 at Minnesota, Dec. 7 at Colorado and Dec. 11 vs. Pittsburgh. He will be eligible to return Dec. 13 vs. Montreal.

Lets try to justify the 3 game suspension for this incident. Was it an elbow to the head, did Cote's feet leave the ice, you betcha, check, check. Could the results have been worse for the Stars player? Probably. But was there an attempt to injure? Kind of looked like it - the Flyers were down 4-1 and Cote was looking to spark the team. What was he thinking going in that hard with elbows up? Still, I kinda think 5 and a game may have been enough punishment for this incident.
I guess we shouldn't be surprised by the league's judgment - lets start hearing those conspircacy theories against the Flyers again - but if they want to start cracking down on hits to the head this is either a) an over-reaction to an already sensitive issue, or b) proof the NHL doesn't just suspend on the results of actions taken, but the intent thats perceived. If the latter is the case, then at least we're getting some consistency here in the rulings, but 3 games? They're obviously ruling on the apparent intent to injure, but I still dunno about this one.....

You've got to be f'ing kidding me? Cote got 3 games for THAT???
What a joke this league has turned into, and it is blatantly obvious now (hell, they so much as admitted it) that the league has it in for the Flyers.

Wow that is complete BS .. I cant believe they gave him 3 games. Two mins for elbowing or even a 4 min elbowing for hitting him in the head but not 3 games. This is redicilous. Are they trying to take checking as well as fighting outa the game. They might as well ditch the pads and sticks throw on some tights and start practicing there tripple axles and double toe loops because thats what this league is trying to do. There trying to turn the nhl into figure skating.
