Rest in peace rick, as someone who's battled depression their entire life, I know what you went through, and you did a f**king great job in spite of it! You played with reckless abandon, fought more than a single 6'7" man and you were [and still are] awesome!

NHL pound-for-pound champ!

Rick Rypien vs. Matt Carkner
You didn't win this fight, but holy **** at who you were fighting! I couldn't believe it when I saw it. And you fought Neil as well that game and beat him!

Canucks best fighter since Brashear, and top 3 pound-for pound ALL-TIME for any team!

After losing my brother, I know how important anniversaries are to those who loved him (my brother). Rick Rypien is truly missed and will always be a "Legend."
Take care, Fellas.

RIP "Ripper!!!!!!"

I think we all add a little bit to the "it's because he was a fighter" argument when we see him as only that. If those of us who are fans put him (and the others before him) into a specific box, what should the rest of the sports world do?

It's incredibly sad that another young man has lost his life, more sad that it's by his own hand. We all admire him for his fights, but he was not just a fighter, he was someone's son, brother, and dear friend. If we only remember him as a fighter, we feed the stereotype.

That's pretty deep, to deep for this site for sure. If he wasn't a fighter he would just be another statistic that nobody knew of.

I don't agree with this. I'm pretty sure the Lokomotiv didn't have any fighter in their roster yet the thread talking about the Lokomotiv crash was 10 pages long the same day.

Well, that was an entire team, dude. You don't even have to follow hockey to think that was enormous news.

Yes a plane full of an entire team should be classified the same, your such a tool.

So if Rick Rypien was just some average player who had offed himself you believe it would have had the same attention on here? Pull your head out of your ass and get a clue on how the world works.

He is acknowedged on a fight site because he was a fighter. Trying to spin as if it is an insult to call him that is ridiculous.

Ever heard of Roman Lyashenko, Trevor Ettinger, Tom Cavanagh? Nobody cared about them and nobody on here would care about Rypien either if he would have been the average 4th liner / NHL-AHL player that doesn't fight.
